Primary Purpose of Department:

Collection Services works closely with library units and the Dean of J. Murrey Atkins Library to coordinate and define technical services and collection needs and ways of meeting them. Collection Services is responsible for licensing, purchasing, cataloging, processing, and ensuring access to library materials in all formats. The department handles the collection/materials budget projections and discretionary materials budget allocations, create vendor selection guidelines and handle vendor negotiations. It manages materials added to and deleted from the library’s collections. Acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, processing, and electronic resources work together to support the mission and to maintain and manage collections that satisfy the teaching, learning, research, and service needs for quality information of the UNC Charlotte population.

In addition to these functions, Collection Services develops and implements policies related to library collections, and provides and analyzes data to assist in assessing resources and services offered within the library. It maintains records of license agreements, contracts, and invoices for materials purchased for the library.

Description of Work:

Library faculty engage in service to the University, community, and profession. We provide access to and promote the discovery of information. We help our communities become proficient information users and lifelong learners. Library faculty serve current and future UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Greater Charlotte and global community by sustaining the intellectual and creative life, and facilitating lifelong learning, discovery, and engagement.

Library faculty are expected to collaborate within the Library and beyond in the performance of professional duties that may include, but are not limited to: selecting, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to materials; supporting teaching, learning, and research; providing outreach to the campus and community; and developing and maintaining digital and technological innovations.

Library faculty participate in scholarly research, creative endeavors, and professional activities to serve the Library, the University, and the information professions. Library faculty are strongly encouraged to pursue external funding for library-related initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Systems

  1. Serves as the integrated library system and discovery system administrator for the Collection Services Unit.
  2. Works collaboratively with Atkins Library’s faculty and staff to evaluate the Library’s online resource discovery environment and to develop and implement strategies and innovative solutions to improve external and internal user experience and maximize system functionality.
  3. Compiles statistical reports regarding bibliographic data of collection.
  4. Coordinates with campus IT in the maintenance of the integrated library system.

Cataloging
  1. Produces original and complex copy cataloging in a variety of formats for the library collections according to national, shared system, and local standards; performs general catalog maintenance such as bibliographic records enhancement, reclassification, holdings, and item record editing.
  2. Trains cataloging staff in cataloging/metadata standards, new technology applications, systems, and tools to continuously improve cataloging efficiency and quality; supervises daily operations of copy catalogers.
  3. Develops policies, goals, procedures, and workflows for cataloging and processing library materials in all formats.

Minimum Experience/Education:

The minimum academic credential required for applicants for faculty positions in Atkins Library is completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by time of application.

Graduation with master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean. A second masters in another discipline or an earned doctorate is highly desirable.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Systems

  1. Experience with ExLibris’s Alma/Primo platform is highly desirable.
  2. Experience determining and configuring back-end functionality in an ILS (configuring cataloging rules, import tables, etc.)
  3. Familiarity with networking concepts such as security certificates, domain name systems, port numbers.
  4. Knowledge of current and emerging models and tools used by libraries for resource discovery.

Cataloging
  1. Three years of recent cataloging/metadata experience in an academic or research library.
  2. Knowledge of current descriptive and subject cataloging practices such as RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCC, MARC21 formats, and authority control.
  3. Proficiency with software programs/products associated with library functions (e.g., Alma, Primo, OpenAthens, OCLC systems and services, MARCEdit, OpenRefine, etc.). Preferred: familiarity with PHP, XML/XSLT, SQL and API web services.
  4. Demonstrated ability to perform detail-oriented and repetitive tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
  5. Experience with bulk importing and exporting of cataloging/metadata records.
  6. Experience developing cataloging/metadata policies and creating documentation to improve communication and processes.
  7. Knowledge of emerging trends in linked data, such as BIBFRAME, RDF, SKOS, etc.

  1. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form to different types of stakeholders with different knowledge backgrounds.
  3. Evidence of commitment to professional development and scholarly activities through research, publication, and service to national and regional professional organizations.
  4. Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidenced through library collections, services, and programs.
  5. Strong commitment to service excellence.

Maximum budgeted salary for this position: $63,000
