Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer/Senior Vice President, the Associate Vice President for Human Resources (AVPHR) will play a key role in leading the continued evolution of Alma College’s human resources function. Specifically, AVPHR, in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer/Senior Vice President, will be charged with developing strategies related to employee engagement, well-being, satisfaction, organizational development, talent acquisition, professional development and total rewards, including position banding, managing competitive compensation programs, and developing work-life balance initiatives. Working in conjunction with leaders across the college, the AVPHR will lead initiatives for HR that drives the attraction, retention, and development of a talented, diverse, and high-performance workforce. The AVPHR will further efforts to grow talent acquisition and development, employee relations, benefits, compensation, workforce analytics, and other HR programs, policies, and initiatives. Additionally, this role is responsible for the overall administration and coordination of the Civil Rights, Title IX, and international employee visa processing functions at Alma College.

The successful candidate will exhibit the following competencies, experiences, and attributes:
• A clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing private colleges like Alma, higher education and other industry and sector HR trends broadly.
• Knowledge of federal, state and local employment related labor laws, FMLA, FLSA, Title IX, EEOC, ADA.
• Ability to communicate, influence, and lead change and enhanced HR practices that promote a strong culture focused on people.
• Innovative leadership, oversight, operational expertise in the areas of employee services, benefits, leave management, talent management, classification and compensation, employee relations, performance management, HR operational support, and other HR systems and services.
• A proven record of successful and progressively responsible leadership and management skills and a history of developing and implementing transformative HR programs, plans, policies, and procedures.
• Experience leading and successfully supporting organizational change in a comparably complex organization.
• Evidence of expertise to make decisions on complicated issues often requiring proactive interventions and the exercising of appropriate authority in the resolution of complex and difficult human resource issues.
• Well-honed people management skills; poised and capable of building consensus and gaining the trust of organizational leadership, faculty, and staff while influencing positive organizational outcomes.
• A demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and clear experience with and commitment to EEO/Affirmative Action policy adherence.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of implementing new, data driven initiatives with successful outcomes.
• Excellent judgment with the ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues with diplomacy, discretion, and integrity.

Supervision Received/Exercised
Reports to the Chief Operating Officer with frequent collaborations with members of the college and the President’s Cabinet. Supervises the Benefits Specialist, Human Resources Assistant, Payroll Specialist and Civil Rights/ Title IX Coordinator.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university.
• Five years of professional human resource administration experience, including at least two years in a leadership role.
• Comprehensive knowledge of employment law.
• Competency in HR technology and software applications.
• Able to interact and communicate effectively in a clear, concise and compassionate manner with a wide range of constituents and to maintain strict confidentiality of personnel matters.
• Superior interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
• Able to gather and analyze information to prepare concise, coherent written reports.
• Experience in public speaking to diverse audiences.
• Strong prioritization, problem-solving and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to understand, implement and create policy.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree
• PHR or SPHR certification.
• Experience, training or certification in organizing and conducting workplace investigations, Title IX investigations or other civil rights investigations.
• Training in conflict resolution or mediation.
