Position Summary::

The University of Alabama Libraries seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking professional to serve as a Reference and Instruction Librarian. This is a clinical appointment reporting to the Associate Dean for Special Collections and working collaboratively in a team of archivists and librarians, as well as archival and digital initiatives staff in Special Collections. The position supports reference, instruction, and outreach in Special Collections and oversight of University Archives through arrangement and description of University records while continually striving toward the unit’s goals of More Product, Less Process (MPLP). This is an exciting opportunity for a librarian to gain an expert knowledge of all archival operations and practices as a ranked faculty member in an R1 university Special Collections unit. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: providing reference service to onsite and remote researchers, including history classes; coordinating and providing instruction to University of Alabama classes, including history classes; coordinating and providing outreach activities, including physical and digital exhibits, to the University and broader community; performing collection development for history; managing records processing in University Archives, including physical arrangement and creation of finding aids and metadata in the unit’s archival data management system, ArchivesSpace; managing restrictions and supervising a records management assistant. This person in this position acquires valuable skills in providing reference service and teaching library instruction for primary source materials and creating physical and digital exhibits for display within University Libraries and for the global research community. Responsibilities of the position change as the University Libraries continue to evolve.This position is an excellent opportunity to work with colleagues who are dedicated to processing and preserving a wide array of rare and unique materials in such areas as Alabama, Southern U.S., African American, and Latin American history.   • Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience providing reference service in an academic library.
  • Experience providing instruction in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated understanding of More Product, Less Process (MPLP) as well as other intensive processing and assessment strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current content and structure standards for institutional records.
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively with varied groups within a complex organization.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience creating physical and digital exhibits.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata creation and standards.
  • Professional experience processing university records, including physical arrangement and creation of finding aids in accordance with institutional records best practices.
  • Experience working with ArchivesSpace or other archival data management system.
  • Knowledge of HTML and experience with WordPress for content management.
  • Experience working with born digital records.
