Job Description

This position performs mechanical repairs and services on medium/heavy duty fleet buses, trucks, and miscellaneous equipment, as well as on modern fleet vehicles. This position oversees repairs, and performs maintenance/repair of vehicles, machinery, and heavy equipment to ensure proper working techniques and methods are being utilized effectively and efficiently. The position acts as contact person for Shuttle Services and as such resolves daily malfunctions, schedules repairs, orders parts and monitors Zonar vehicle maintenance system.

The person in this position shall follow all applicable NAU Service Policies and Procedures and environmental protection and procurement practices.

Mechanical maintenance and repair of University Vehicles -55%
  • Performs regular scheduled preventive maintenance, tune-ups, etc.
  • Performs diagnosing operational, mechanical, hydraulic, air and electrical malfunctions on assigned equipment, and regular preventive maintenance on heavy vehicles with emphasis on servicing engines, chassis, drive trains, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes and tires.
  • Overhauls and repairs engines and transmissions on gas and diesel equipment; repairs and maintains heavy equipment (loaders, graders, backhoes, dump/bucket trucks, forklifts and storm drain cleaners); troubleshoots and repairs or replaces digital electronic components and computers.
  • Overhauls, repairs and/or replaces vehicle parts such as on steering and brake systems.
  • Repairs electrical/hydraulic wheelchair lifts on transit buses. Includes repairs on entry doors and openings.
  • Suspension repairs such as shock absorbers, front end parts, tires, and wheels and check for proper tire alignment; includes air suspension systems on buses, dump trucks, and bucket trucks.
  • Repairs and overhauls mechanical, electrical, air and hydraulic and cooling systems 12 and 24 Volt electrical system repairs.
  • Service such as belts, batteries, starters and alternators.
  • Troubleshooting electrical malfunctions in transit and coach bus lighting and accessory/ control systems.
  • Road tests equipment after maintenance has been completed

HVAC/AC maintenance and repair - 15%
  • Troubleshoots and repairs A/C systems. A/C systems include transit and coach bus HVAC

Administrative Duties - 15%
  • Requisitions parts, computes work orders and prepares service records and reports as required
  • Acts as contact person for Shuttle Services and as such resolves daily malfunctions, schedules repairs, orders parts and monitors Zonar vehicle maintenance system
  • Completes required paperwork, inputs data in computer and maintains daily records.

Leadership and Technical Knowledge - 10%
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to assigned mechanics.
  • attends meetings, classes and communicates with supervisors, co-workers, and customers on a daily basis.
  • Works within a diverse student and employee population and environment.

Other duties as assigned - 5%
  • May be required to be on call during snow removal operations and available for emergency repairs.

Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Extensive physical effort; requires stair climbing, heavy lifting, handling, pushing or moving objects up to 50 pounds (or greater with the use of mechanical assistance); constant standing/walking.
  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates or 2-year trade school certificate relating to automotive repair AND
  • 5-8 years of experience in diagnosis, repair and maintenance of heavy equipment OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of current Arizona class C or higher driver's license.


Preferred Qualifications

  • ASME Master Technician Certification
  • Certification of Electrical/Hydraulic wheel chair lifts.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Extensive range of knowledge of all types of diesel and gasoline vehicles.
  • Air and Hydraulic brake and steering systems inspection diagnosis and repair procedures.
  • Computerized diagnostic analyzer use procedures and practices.
  • The operating principles of alternative fuel, hybrid, gasoline and diesel fueled engines.
  • Power/drivability system inspection, diagnosis trouble shooting and repair.
  • Welding and fabricating skills.
  • Shop safety principles and procedures.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Operating shop tools and equipment.
  • Estimating time and cost of repair maintenance work for a wide variety of heavy equipment.
  • Scheduling/ coordinating heavy equipment service and repair to maximize utilization.
  • Follow oral and written instruction.
  • Interpret repair manuals, service and recall bulletins.
  • Utilize a PC and PC programs as they relate to fleet maintenance management systems.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 90 lbs.
  • Communicates effectively
  • Balances competing priorities.
  • Exercises good judgment and professionalism in a fast-paced setting
  • Performs inspections and makes necessary adjustments to conform to vehicle specifications

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

Salary range begins at $47,634. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
