Summary

The College and Academic Counselor for Tulane University's Upward Bound program is a full-time position responsible for co-designing and implementing college and career readiness programming, activities, workshops, and individual academic support plans to 11th and 12th grade participant caseload to ensure success in high school and acceptance and persistence at the post-secondary level. This position, with support from the Director and Assistant Director, oversees the organization of key components of college readiness including fit-match selections, admissions, financial literacy, test prep, personal statements, social-emotional concepts, and resiliency indicators. The counselor works within the federal legislation and grant regulations to ensure compliance.

The Upward Bound program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is a college prep program that focuses on college completion for first generation and low-income students. The program seeks to address the needs of these students and to increase the rates of post-secondary acceptance, enrollment and graduation. Upward Bound's evidence-based model consist of instrumental academic support services, including weekly academic classes, tutoring and mentoring, ACT test preparation, individual counseling, social and emotional learning, financial aid workshops for students and their parents, college prep seminar, and scholarship workshops, college tours, career exploration events, financial literacy, and internships. In addition, a six-week summer component reinforces the work. Students commit the program the four years in high school and receive support during their post-secondary years. The Upward Bound program is a part of the College and Career Success Team at the Cowen Institute at Tulane University. The mission of the Cowen Institute is to advance public education and youth success in New Orleans and beyond.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years professional experience to include working with at risk youth in a high school or college setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Education, or a comparable field of study
  • Experience in teaching academic and college-readiness courses
  • Experience working with similar population TRIO serves
  • Familiarity with New Orleans educational system in general and Cowen Institute's work
