Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic healthcare team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs, industrial settings and other healthcare environments.

Part-time faculty members shall maintain a prorated number of office hours each week, at a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes for each workload hour taught, at such days, times and locations as will accommodate the needs of the students.

This position requires in-person instruction on Millersville University’s campus.

Contingency: This position is contingent upon sufficient enrollments in assigned classes.

Responsibilities include:

Teaching:The Athletic Trainer will have the following preventative responsibilities:

  • Assist in the coordination and administration of physical examinations for all intercollegiate athletic team members.
  • Implements appropriate injury prevention measures including but not limited to therapeutic exercise, activity mitigation, taping, and bracing.
  • Assist in the coordination of the provision of medical and physician coverage for all intercollegiate athletic practices, home and away contests in compliance with university and applicable athletic conference and athletic association policies.

The Athletic Trainer would work with the Athletic Trainers, physicians, the Athletic Directors and coaches on the following evaluation responsibilities:
  • Conduct evaluations and treatments of athletically related injuries consistent with Millersville University Standing Orders. Inform Head Trainer/Team Physician of major injuries.
  • Conduct referral services for athletic injuries.

Other work would include rehabilitative work with physicians including:
  • Develop and implement rehabilitation programs for athletes recovering from injuries.
  • Utilize those modalities consistent with team physician’s approval.

Other work with the three full-time permanent Athletic Trainers would include:
  • Keep accurate records of athletic injuries, evaluations, and treatments.
  • Be present for assigned practices and intercollegiate events.
  • Assist in the administration of inventory, maintenance of equipment, supervision of graduate assistants and athletic training students.
  • Perform other duties not specifically stated herein but deemed essential to the operation of the athletic training program as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer, and/or athletic directors.
  • Actual assignments will depend upon department need.
  • There is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the position.

Scholarship:
  • In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship commensurate with the assignment.

Service:
  • Service contributions commensurate with the assignment, for example, serve on departmental and university-wide committees, participate in program-related projects and/or teaching related professional development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 15 graduate credits. (A master’s degree plus ten (10) additional hours of graduate credit are required at minimum to be eligible for consideration for tenure; if a faculty is not granted tenure, his/her sixth year shall be the terminal year of employment. Faculty appointed in the fall 2019 semester must apply for tenure by May 1 of their fifth probationary year.)
  • BOC Certification.
  • PA licensed or eligible.
  • One year experience working in a NCAA intercollegiate or similar setting.
  • Ability to:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in athletic training or related field.
  • Experience at the NCAA Division II level.
  • Competence in the use of computers, and various sports medicine technologies.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records, preferably Sportware software.
  • Additional appropriate certification (e.g. CSCS, NASM-PES, NASM-CES, EMT, etc.).Prior college-level teaching experience.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW / EVALUATIONS:
  • Five-year probationary period for tenure-track faculty. Annual performance review/evaluations include renewal/non-renewal recommendations and specify areas for improvement. Annual performance review process requires student evaluations conducted twice each academic year utilizing an approved evaluation instrument; peer evaluation by the department evaluation committee (two per semester) and by the department chairperson (one each year); updated vitae; and any other pertinent information. Tenured faculty are evaluated every fifth year from the date of tenure. The performance review/evaluation process requires student evaluations for all classes during the fall semester; peer evaluation by the department evaluation committee (one per semester) and by the department chairperson (one each year); updated vitae; and any other pertinent information. The department evaluation committee discusses the evaluation with the faculty member and submits a written evaluation and recommendation to the department chairperson. The department chairperson provides a written recommendation, provides an opportunity for the faculty member to discuss the evaluation, and submits all evaluations and recommendations to the dean. The dean provides opportunity for discussion and provides a written evaluation to the Provost, who makes a recommendation to the President.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: Millersville University Athletics sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports programs, more than 450 student-athletes, and has more than 50 faculty, staff, and coaches. Millersville is a NCAA Division II program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach courses face-to-face and online if necessary [customize as appropriate if assignment is student teacher supervision or other supervision] at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, class discussion, using online tools and/or equipment and/or other appropriate tools appropriate modes of education delivery.
  • Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction.
  • Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university and community.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risks.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
