ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

 

Clayton State University, a unit of the University System of Georgia, has been recognized repeatedly as a “Top Workplace in Atlanta” by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.      Founded in 1969, the University enrolls nearly 7,000 students from 31 states and 42 countries. A Minority Serving Institution (MSI), Clayton State’s student body is 70 percent female and is more than 60 percent African American, almost 10 percent Hispanic, 7 percent Asian, and 15 percent White. The average age of students seeking degrees is 25, with approximately 50 percent of the students being traditional age.

     Emphasizing an environment of experiential-based learning to prepare students to succeed in a diverse society, Clayton State offers 11 graduate degrees, 43 undergraduate degrees, and 5 associate degrees through its 4 colleges—Arts and Sciences, Business, Health, and Information and Mathematical Sciences. In addition to 22 online degree programs, the University holds classes in McDonough and Peachtree City, Georgia. The University provides opportunities for certificate and exploratory programs through its Continuing and Professional Education unit. In fiscal year 2020, the University awarded 145 master’s degrees, 953 bachelor’s degrees, 98 associate degrees, and 25 certificates.

THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH

The College of Health (COH) is among the largest of the colleges at Clayton State, with approximately 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Degree options include bachelor’s degrees in dental hygiene, health care management, health and fitness management, health sciences, and nursing, and master’s degree options in family nurse practitioner and health administration. COH contributes to the overall mission of the University through these combinations of undergraduate and graduate degrees and professional programs.

     The College is the academic home to more than 40 full-time faculty members. Their diligence to teaching, program and curriculum development, and innovation have earned the College’s programs a reputation for excellence. Its dental hygiene and nursing degree completion programs are ranked among the list of “Top online colleges” by SR Education Group.

     The faculty’s nationally recognized research and professional leadership both enhance their classroom teaching and connect students to their respective fields. As a learning community of people who interact with, care about, and serve the community, the College of Health focuses on addressing complex social problems, not only through treating illness, but also through promoting wellness.

     The College strives to provide interprofessional collaboration opportunities whenever possible so that graduates will enter their chosen professions ready to collaborate and consult with a wide range of professionals. COH students also have the opportunity to study abroad to learn about global health and accompany faculty to professional conferences to present research.

     Many students in most majors are offered opportunities to participate in on-site internships before graduation. Dental hygiene students learn in the Clayton State University Community Dental Clinic and the other COH majors participate in on-site experiences in a wide range of community and tertiary health centers.

THE OPPORTUNITY

 

The Dean guides and leads the development of educational programs in the College of Health to help meet the healthcare workforce needs within the state of Georgia.  Additionally, the Dean provides oversight of the students, faculty, and instructional programs offered in the College of Nursing.

     With the primary purpose of cultivating and implementing pedagogy that builds on existing health-related programs at the University, the Dean works closely with the department chairs to provide vision, leadership, and direction for the university-wide efforts in the promotion of health and wellness within the instructional programs.

     In addition to faculty and staff recruitment, hiring, retention, and well-being, the Dean is responsible for personnel evaluations, including staff evaluations and annual evaluations for administrative leadership in the College; faculty renewal; and tenure, promotion, and pre- and post-tenure reviews. The Dean has oversight of all college budgets, including state, foundation, and grant funds, and the research and acquisition of external resources through grants and philanthropy.

     The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty colleagues and the Provost to design the administrative structure within the College, including establishing leadership roles and division of staff responsibilities. Administrators currently reporting to the Dean are the COH Program Coordinator, Assistant Dean of Nursing, Chair of Dental Hygiene, and Assistant Dean of Health Professions. Primary Functions

• Provide leadership for college shared governance.
• Direct program efforts in developing academic policies and curricula.
• Direct and foster development of new graduate and undergraduate academic programs and degrees.
• Conduct annual assessment and comprehensive program review, and review progress toward accreditation.
• Support and promote faculty research efforts.
• Oversee program growth through student recruiting, retention, and progression toward degree.

Required Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in a discipline qualified to teach in the College of Health
• A record of appropriate scholarship, research, and experience commensurate for rank
• Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• At least three years of academic administrative experience as assistant or associate dean or higher
• Practical experience in the discipline of the program
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• A record of successful external fund-raising (through grants, contracts, competitive grants, etc.)
• A record of collaborative cross-disciplinary program development
• A demonstrated record of participating in community outreach activities and building relationships with healthcare and educational partners
• Demonstrated experience with professional accrediting agencies, such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Dental Accreditation, Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences, and/or the Association of University Programs in Health Administration
