*GRCC Academic and Student Affairs is completing a reorganization that will be in effect July 1, 2022. This position will be a part of the new School of Health Sciences.

SUMMARY

GRCC is seeking faculty who possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of ages, ethnicities, national origins and abilities; engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student-learning outcomes; demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development; and provide service to our students, the college, and our community at large.

Faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work as well as work associated with the School of Health Sciences and GRCC as a whole. In addition to the major position responsibilities, it is expected that faculty demonstrate outstanding communication skills, collaborate effectively, use personal initiative to overcome obstacles, and work efficiently to meet deadlines. In an environment where innovation is valued, each faculty member will take responsibility to perform their work in a manner consistent with both the letter and the spirit of GRCC values.

Essential Job Functions
    Develop program and course outlines, goals, and objectives that align with accreditation standards. Teach Cardiovascular Technology courses, including didactic and clinical/lab instruction. Effectively assess, document, and advise students regarding their academic and clinical performance. Lead the program accreditation process and submit required reports in collaboration with the Allied Health Program Director. Contribute to the growth and development of the program and the college by participating in academic program review; curriculum development, evaluation, and revision; committee membership; and department meetings. Analyze program, course, and student outcome data; facilitate review of student performance data with key stakeholders and suggestions for improvement. Incorporate technologies and instructional methods for enhanced teaching and learning to diverse groups of students. Communicate clearly with students, staff, faculty, and college administration, clinical sites and other external stakeholders. Assist the Allied Health Program Director in the preparation of internal reports and other required documents. Maintain current professional licensure and other requirements necessary for practicing within assigned clinical facilities (i.e., current immunizations, BLS, etcetera). Engage in on-going professional development to maintain expertise in the field and communicate outcomes with colleagues. Maintain current standards of clinical practice; effectively prepare and orient students to assigned clinical settings. Advise students on academic programs and employment/career goals. Participate in departmental student academic advising plans. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities. Assist in marketing/promotion of departmental and college programs and events. Promote the department by maintaining partnerships with state and local communities, health care facilities, and schools. Demonstrate a commitment to the department and GRCC through active participation on departmental- and college-wide committees and projects. Guide, mentor, and support new adjunct faculty to ensure consistent standards and instructional practices within each course. Adhere to college processes, policies, and contractual obligations. Support GRCC's Strategic Plan through departmental and College Action Projects. Support the department and the college through other work normally expected of GRCC faculty members.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education/License
    Current RCIS certification required. Bachelor's degree in related field required; Master's degree in related field preferred. In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicants with additional certifications (or willingness to pursue additional certifications) are highly preferred (such as RVT, RCDS, RN, RCES, or RT).


Work Experience
    Minimum of two years full-time clinical experience in Cardiovascular Technology. Recent experience (within the past 3 years) in CVT practice or education. Experience in CVT training, education, curriculum design, and/or utilization of education technology, highly preferred. Prior experience with JRC-CVT accreditation preferred. Experience with online teaching and learning modalities preferred. Community college teaching experience or experience teaching adult learners preferred.

    Ability to effectively use and evaluate data. Possess excellent organizational skills and communication skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with a variety of people in various academic and healthcare settings. Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving abilities. Ability to perform routine duties with minimum supervision. Demonstrate enthusiasm and interest in supporting students, staff, and colleagues. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations. Adhere to the code of ethics and safety regulations; maintain confidentiality. Ability to work as part of a team; engage in a team-teaching approach.


Physical Demands
    Physical Strength - transferring patients to or from wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Other transfers may be required, including lifting up to 30 pounds. Mobility - stand, lift, reach, bend, twist, stretch, and provide support and stability. Ability to maneuver in restricted spaces. Respond quickly in an emergency. Hearing - Hear, recognize and respond to sounds emitted by patients, students, patient monitors, and stethoscopes. Visual Discrimination - Sufficient vision to differentiate movements; read markings on instruments and measuring devices; read small print. Coordination - Sufficient motor skills, hand-eye coordination skills, manipulative skills and sensory function in one upper extremity may be needed to assist and demonstrate CVT interventions. Many other therapeutic activities require dexterity, manipulation, strength, and body flexibility to perform. Manual Dexterity - Sufficient fine motor skills to manipulative objects and people safely.


Mental Demands
    Ability to work under pressure; possess mature judgment and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes. Ability to handle sensitive or difficult situations in a confidential manner. Ability to cope effectively with the demands associated with working with students in fast-paced healthcare settings and within the organization. An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.


Working Conditions

    Must be able to travel to off-campus clinical settings. Must be able to work in a classroom and laboratory in an academic setting well as external clinical sites. Ability to work in high traffic, indoor environments. Must be able to work flexible hours.

Grand Rapids Junior College (GRJC) was founded in 1914 by the Grand Rapids Board of Education after a resolution was passed by the University of Michigan’s faculty which encouraged the establishment of junior colleges in Michigan.

Today, GRCC’s eight-block downtown campus, encompassing more than 25 acres in downtown Grand Rapids, includes several classroom buildings, a learning center (including the Diversity Learning Center) and library, Spectrum Theater, the Applied Technology Center (which features a green roof), a remodeled music building, a fieldhouse with natatorium, a student center, Bostwick Commons, and the Calkins Science Center.

The college also offers instruction from a variety of regional centers in the metropolitan Grand Rapids area (including numerous local high schools, regional centers and its two Learning Corners on Wealthy St. and Seward Ave.) and on the West Michigan lakeshore (including West Ottawa High School, Careerline Tech Center, the Midtown Holland Center and Grand Valley State University's Meijer Campus in Holland).

In addition, GRCC has two Michigan Technical Education Centers (M-TECs in West Michigan. The Patrick Thompson M-TEC, part of GRCC's Lakeshore Campus, located in Holland, opened in Fall 2000 in partnership with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District. The Leslie E. Tassell M-TEC ® in Grand Rapids opened in 2002. This world-class facility offers training in manufacturing, auto service, and building and construction trades.

To increase capacity to meet unprecedented demand, GRCC acquired the former campus of Davenport University on Fulton St. in downtown Grand Rapids and began offering courses at Sneden Hall beginning in the Fall 2009 semester.

In Winter 2010, more than 17,000 students enrolled in more than 1,900 liberal arts and occupational courses. The diverse student body represents students from Kent and surrounding counties as well as students from across the U.S. and 22 other nations. Another 10,000 learners are served by non-credit instructional opportunities. In addition to traditional classroom environments, students may also receive instruction through community and distant service-learning offerings, seminars, workshops, training classes, distance learning options and other educational formats. GRCC employs a faculty of more than 260 full-time and 590 part-time members as well as a staff of 430, all of whom are focused on the College’s priorities to be student-centered, collaborative, and flexible. Throughout its 90-year history of academic excellence, GRCC has maintained a solid reputation as a premier transfer institution and is nationally recognized for both its liberal arts and occupational programs.
