Assistant/Associate Professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Academic Clinician, Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine

Location: School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: May 09, 2022
Deadline:

We are seeking a highly motivated, proactive, professional laboratory animal veterinarian to join our academic group at the University of Pennsylvania.

This position will ensure expert veterinary care and welfare support to the research animal community at the University of Pennsylvania. As a faculty member of the Department of Pathobiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, the successful candidate will contribute to training of veterinary students, externs and residents in the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) within the Department. The successful candidate will join University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR), which includes a team of 9-veterinarians and 13-veterinary technicians, along with ~180 staff members that support business, operations, training and diagnostic services for the University. ULAR provides care for a daily population of more than 150,000 animals belonging to 6 schools across the Philadelphia campus and at New Bolton Center. In addition to a daily census of 45,000 mouse cages and 1,000 rat cages, other species for which ULAR has oversight include nonhuman primates, sheep, swine, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, shrews, fish, frogs, and birds.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the clinical veterinary care of research animals, animal protocol and amendment review, investigator training, and other duties to ensure compliance with accrediting and regulatory organizations. They will play a critical role on the veterinary team, working to effectively consult on animal models, assisting with veterinary care guidance and policies, and assist with procedures and surgeries in a wide variety of species. Ideally the candidate will have experience with aspects of theriogenology and breeding colony management, particularly related to USDA-covered species. On-call coverage will be shared with the veterinary team on a rotational basis.

The successful candidate will have an active role in teaching the specialty of laboratory animal medicine to our DLAM Residents through both didactic and one-on-one mentorship during the 3-year training program. In this role, the candidate will serve as a lecturer in the DLAM courses related to biology and diseases of major animal species used in research. Additional research and academic duties will include mentoring professional veterinary and graduate students in specialized rotations, investigating clinical laboratory animal science topics and presenting challenging and interesting cases to veterinary groups within and beyond Penn. Salary, compensation, and faculty appointment (on the Academic Clinician (non-tenure) track) will be commensurate with prior experience.
