Position Summary

The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline. The MPA is ranked 3rd in California by US News and World Report (2021), and 14th of 200 schools in North America by Eduniversal (2014) based on factors including graduate salaries and student satisfaction.

The Academic Advisor is a vital member of the School of Public Affairs in the College of Professional Studies & Fine Arts (PSFA). The Academic Advisor provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate Criminal Justice and Public Administration majors, and supports graduate coordinators. Additionally, the Academic Advisor facilitates student progress through the programs and provides support for students experiencing concerns regarding academic advisement, course selection, and degree evaluation. This position also provides guidance related to students transitioning from high school and/or a community college, as well as on issues related to self-awareness, personal growth and academic probation that facilitates the continuation of students towards degree goals.

The Academic Advisor works collaboratively and collegially with a diverse workforce, including the Undergraduate Advising Office in order to ensure students receive appropriate advising. This position also provides input in the development and implementation of School-level student success initiatives, and coordinates/leads student-focused events, councils, initiatives, and etc., as directed by the Assistant Dean. Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Specialized Skills Required

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, WebPortal, SIMS, Canvas Homeroom, Decision Desk, Adobe.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Master's degree in student personnel, higher education/student affairs, counseling or related field.
• Experience advising a diverse group of students along the academic spectrum including, promising students, students in the middle or high achieving students
• Experience utilizing SDSU Navigate advising (EAB) and other academic advising tools
• Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines in terms of course requirements and career paths.
• Experience advising a student organization.
• Ability to use initiative to plan and implement program activities and improvements.
• Experience in database tracking and management.
• Two years of experience in interpreting and explaining academic policies governing public or private university admissions.
• Two years of experience working in a college or university’s admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar or other student service related office.
• Demonstrated experience using a degree audit system.
• Demonstrated experience reviewing college transcript information.
• Ability to calculate grade point averages.
• Demonstrated commitment to engaging in service with underrepresented populations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students.
• Experience in fostering or has demonstrated commitment to underrepresented student success.
• Expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
