Description
Senior Laboratory Technologist IThe College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants for a Senior Laboratory Technologist I position located in the Department of Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences.  Under general supervision, this position maintains the quality and efficiency of the Diagnostic Parasitology laboratory in conjunction with the Molecular Parasitology research laboratory. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting routine classical and molecular parasitology diagnostics on clinical and research specimens, assisting with specimen accessioning, performing general laboratory tasks, adhering to safety procedures, maintaining client confidentiality, and providing customer service. Documents and troubleshoots problems with procedures and equipment with emphasis on laboratory quality assurance. Oversees training of laboratory technologists, student employees, and emergency students. Assists with the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures. Participates in relevant scientific continuing education programs.

Diagnostics

  • Process and accession diagnostic samples
  • Performs and interprets fecal floats, Knott's test, parasite ID, and various serological tests on clinical specimens
  • Adheres to established quality assurance procedures
  • Proper Bio-hazard disposal
  • Reviews and transcribes results within published turnaround times
  • Operates standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in parasite diagnostics
  • Participates in general laboratory safety training
  • Adheres to all university and lab established safety procedures
  • Maintains client confidentiality
  • Customer service interactions with veterinary students
  • General laboratory maintenance and organization/cleanliness
  • Documents and troubleshoots problems with procedures and equipment with emphasis on laboratory quality assurance
  • Oversees training of laboratory technologists, student employees, and emergency students
  • Assists with the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures
  • Participates in relevant scientific continuing education programs
Research

  • Process, accession, and catalog research samples
  • Performs and interprets DNA extraction, PCR reagents, gel electrophoresis, real time PCR, and various serological tests on specimens
  • Adheres to established quality assurance procedures
  • Reviews and transcribes results within timely manner
  • Operates standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in parasite diagnostics and storage
  • Participates in general laboratory safety training
  • Adheres to all university and lab established safety procedures
  • Customer service interactions with veterinary students, veterinarians, and biologists
  • General laboratory maintenance and organization/cleanliness 
  • Perform partial or full necropsies as part of research projects
  • Perform histology preparation procedures on formalin fixed tissues
  • Assist with live animal research on birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates
  • Proper Bio-hazard and carcass disposal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

Advanced knowledge of biology, microbiology, and/or medical technology.  Ability to establish and identify laboratory findings.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to perform testing procedures on various clinical specimens.  Ability to adhere to safety procedures.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Excellent computer skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of relevant experience. Bachelor’s Degree in biology, microbiology, wildlife health, medical technology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.  One year of working in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting.
