Job Description

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN), Ophthalmic Technologies Program, is currently seeking a full-time tenure track Contact Lens Instructor to begin Fall semester 2022. Teaching assignments include lectures and labs on Contact Lenses -Basic and Advanced, Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye, and other professional related subspecialties with the possibility of day, evening, weekend, on-ground, online, and/or hybrid classes in accord with Program's needs. Under the direction of the Program Director, primary job responsibilities of the successful applicant include, but are not limited to:
  • Teaching a minimum of 15 instructional units per semester and holding a minimum of five office hours per week. Primary teaching responsibility includes teaching Contact lens courses and Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye course. Other ophthalmic related courses may be assigned on an as needed basis.
  • Assuming leadership roles within the assigned program/department and at the institution level.
  • Assisting the Program Director with preparing Accreditation reports, Grant writing, Community Outreach programs, maintaining learning supplies for contact lens courses.
  • Supporting the mission of the College of Southern Nevada and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).
  • Building accountability and developing benchmarks for institutional assessment and evaluation.
  • Preparing and teaching courses to a diverse and multicultural student population based on established program level, course level and General Education Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
  • Applying a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of the student population and standards of the discipline.
  • Participating in college and departmental responsibilities including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the General Education, program and course level, committees, councils, work groups, college and community service activities, task forces, and various types of professional development.
  • Evaluating student progress and provide clear and timely feedback reflecting program and course learning outcomes in line with Program and COA accreditation expectations.
  • Providing teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
  • Supporting the college, school, and department goals and objectives through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the Program Director, Department Chair, Dean, and/or Associate Vice President, Vice President, and Vice President of Academic Affairs.


Qualities of a Successful Candidate

  • Commitment to ensuring student success with obtaining ABO/NCLE certifications and Nevada Optician licensure.
  • Ethics, integrity, and sound professional judgment.
  • Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge of Opticianry/Ophthalmic protocols, procedures, products, and practical applications.


Required Qualifications
  • Nevada Licensed Optician/OD or Equivalent State Licensed Optician/JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Technician or higher / OD: with ability to become a Nevada Licensed Optician/OD within one year.
  • Four or more years of Contact Lens Fitting experience.
  • ABO Basic / NCLE Basic Certifications or higher - (OD licensure replaces this requirement). JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Technician (or higher) can be used for this requirement, but applicant must be able to obtain ABO/NCLE certifications within one year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain ABO / NCLE Practical and Advanced Certification within one year of employment.
  • Associate degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing from a COA accredited institution. - (OD licensure replaces this requirement).


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited College/University in Education, Workforce Development, or Allied health in addition to AAS Degree in Opticianry or JCAHPO COT Certification or higher. OD Degree replaces this preferred qualification.
  • Minimum of one year (two semesters or three quarters) experience teaching college level lectures and labs in the profession.
  • Two or more years of documented experience teaching ABO/NCLE/JCAHPO/COPE Continuing Education courses at the State or National level may be applied towards his requirement.
  • Authorship or Co-authorship of Continuing Education courses/Training manuals in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population.
  • Ability to collaborate with Program Director and other faculty in redesigning courses and/or teaching new courses.
  • Grant writing experience for obtaining lab equipment, learning materials, and cooperative agency/practitioner relationships.


Starting Salary Range

Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent teaching experience. For example, for an instructor with a Master's degree the salary range would be $46,691 to $58,364 annually. The entire salary range is up to $70,038 annually with a Doctorate and 10 years' experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for the initial salary placement purposes. *

Bargaining unit Faculty members hired are eligible for relocation expenses reimbursement in accordance with the College of Southern Nevada Faculty Contract CSN-NFA Contract 2020-22.
