Job Description

The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for leading and coordinating college-wide marketing and communication efforts through managing public information assignments; serving as the spokesperson for the college; advising leadership regarding communication and marketing needs for new partnerships, initiatives, and developments; creating external web site content; and developing and implementing marketing, news, and content strategies. This position leads institutional efforts for branding and marketing strategy, including visual and written internal and external communications. In addition, the position is responsible for performing a variety of design work, marketing coordination, writing, editing, research, and other activities to support these efforts.
  • Develop and maintain marketing, branding, and communication strategy including personnel management, creative direction, production, budgeting, and analysis of results. Work with executive leadership to develop strategic initiatives to meet institutional and program goals, including marketing support for strategic enrollment management initiatives.
  • Deployment, implementation, and review of marketing plans. Continually evaluate and refine tactics to maintain relevance as the market changes. Oversee the development of marketing related bids, production of materials, and projects with vendors and freelance agents.
  • Maintain effective communication channels throughout the institution to include coordination of marketing and branding activities, promotion of positive institutional news and events, and timely dissemination of key strategic decisions.
  • Oversee college public relations efforts to generate news and events coverage, increase earned media, and promote community awareness of academic and business development programs, administrative initiatives and enrollment information. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to convey information to publicize and represent the college.
  • Ensure college campaigns and materials are consistent with college branding and image. Review all internal and external publications and marketing pieces for quality assurance.
  • Complete special projects as assigned by executive leadership.
  • Forecast, prepare, and track budgets for marketing, public relations, and communications. Responsible for the development of an annual marketing and communication budget that relates to the integrated marketing and communication plan and department goals.
  • Provide leadership and direction to supervising staff responsible for communications, public relations, and marketing. Provide leadership for inclusive and diverse marketing and communication efforts.
  • Provide leadership and direction to various departments to aid and support internal communication and marketing efforts. Consult with leadership and serve as a representative to institution committees when expertise in communication and marketing is needed.
  • Oversee strategic direction, visual identity, and appropriate communication efforts on public-facing academic and enrollment focused webpages. Approve additional functionality when available or directed by leadership.
  • Manage all “news” content for the external (public) web site. Provide timely and relevant updates, ensuring content links to the college's overall strategic direction and integrated marketing and communication plan. Work with various departmental representatives to strategically carry out marketing and communication plans for the college and work with the Website Manager to ensure content portrays the best public image.
  • Monitor and manage all media mentions to provide reports for leadership.
  • Manage internal communication, ensuring news items link to the college's overall strategic direction and integrated marketing and communication plan.
  • Advise student services employees to support communication needs for student success initiatives and student communication. Work with the recruitment team to align marketing and recruitment efforts.
  • Manage and produce “high profile” video projects for college events and college initiatives with the college videographer and photographer.
  • Manage the creation and distribution of content for social media. Oversee the institution's Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts and provide regular updates.
  • Oversee demographic and other marketing studies to identify trends that maximize effectiveness of marketing and strategic enrollment efforts; research targeted markets and evaluate marketing strategies to identify potential students, alumni, and donors and identify strategies related to key marketing and communication opportunities for the college.
  • Oversee and coordinate the planning and purchase of college-wide print advertising, including ads, brochures, billboards, flyers, posters, etc., that align with the integrated marketing plan in cooperation with the approval of appropriate unit officers.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of print, video, and online publications; web strategy and communications; and interactive marketing and social media, to include class schedules and catalogs. 20. Remain current in field, making recommendations on software, hardware, marketing mediums, and trends affecting target markets.

The ideal candidate should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing principles and creative practices as related to advertising, branding, and promotions.
  • Knowledge of public and media relations practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply communication, social and electronic media to advance messaging.
  • Budgeting and forecasting experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of advertising agency practices including local media outlets.
  • Knowledge of website design, authoring, messaging, and marketing tools.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Prioritization and deadline management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and employee population.
  • Knowledge of graphic design applications, word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing.
  • Knowledge of copywriting and editing as it relates to advertising materials and media content.
  • Knowledge of 508 compliance as it relates to digital communications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Marketing, Communications, and/or Public Relations or related field from an regionally accredited college/university; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4-5 years of full-time, related experience involving marketing, communications, and/or public relations.
