About This Role:

Lamar University’s Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) is administratively located within the Division of Enrollment Management and Marketing within the Office of Retention and Student Success. The Transfer Coordinator reports directly to the Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center. The Transfer Coordinator supports the UAC and the university with advocacy and assistance to transfer students. The position manages the process for transfer students after admission to Lamar University to enrollment.

The Transfer Coordinator supports the university, Enrollment Management division, and UAC to connect newly admitted students to their academic advisors. They will endeavor to simplify the entire enrollment process for all transfer students. The Transfer Coordinator collaborates with pertinent campus constituents to remove barriers to enrollment, help student acclimate to the Lamar University campus, and ensure the applicability of the maximum number of transfer credits apply to their LU chosen degree plan. The position manages and supports the academic advisor assigned to help junior and senior transfer students.

What You’ll Do – Position Duties

As a member of our team, you will have an impact on our clients through accomplishment of the following responsibilities:

  • Facilitate student success by developing and participating in on-going and new projects to serve transfer students.
  • Supervise the transfer advisor and assist with the oversight of advising for all junior and senior transfer students.
  • Collaborate with academic units to ensure accurate information is available to students.
  • Track students’ progress through the enrollment lifecycle utilizing communication, reports, and analysis.
  • Partner with all Enrollment Management and university departments to develop and maintain transfer services and event programming and resources. Including STARS, Success Coaches, Recruitment, Admissions and Financial Aid to address issues facing transfer students and function as the on-campus champion for these issues.
  • Remain updated on local and national transfer trends in order to maintain excellent transfer services and cultivate ongoing relationships with transfer partners.
  • Represent the UAC in meetings with students, parents, faculty, other campus units, and administrators in a professional manner, on campus as well as at off-campus events.
  • Engage in professional development activities, memberships in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, division and department training meetings, and information technology skills and training sessions.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new advisors and act as the transfer student expert for advisors.
  • Function as a liaison between the UAC, Admissions department and Registrar in matters related to transfer students and transferred credits.
  • Act as a resource for campus constituencies and serve on university committees as needed and assigned.
  • Lead initiatives as assigned pertaining to transfer students (committee work, new enrollment initiatives, etc.).
  • Prepare required reports and other transfer student information accurately to set, track, and achieve enrollment goals.
  • Utilize technology to manage and enhance academic advising, student success and retention initiatives and champion these and techniques learned to advisors within the assigned Meta Major.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • One year of experience with academic advising, recruitment, transcript evaluation or related experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with leading a group of staff or student staff.
  • Knowledge of FERPA.
  • Effective customer/student service experience.
  • Dependability and collegiality.
  • Comprehend and maintain current knowledge of the university’s academic programs, policies, and procedures related to transfer coursework and applicability to LU degree plans.
  • Familiarity with current higher education technology as well as software such as Microsoft Office, Banner, and DegreeWorks. Experience with Navigate, ARGOS, Xtender and other platforms preferred.
  • Aptitude for cross training in different areas of transfer work and university practices.
  • Demeanor to work cooperatively and harmoniously with administration, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage time wisely.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with students, parents and university personnel.
  • Contribute to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to lead successfully a group to complete a task or initiative, and lead multiple of them simultaneously.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Join a fraternity or sorority
  • Get involved in community service
  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
