General Summary

This position works closely with the Associate Director of Business Operations regarding fiscal management of the University Housing Services Department daily operational budget and reserve project budgets. The position assists in the preparation and monitoring of budgets and financial expenditures for on campus housing facilities. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Associate Director with administrative functions for the Department. This requires the position to be proficient with Excel and to work independently on completing tasks while also working collaboratively with unit personnel who do not have a background in accounting practices.

Requires adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and guidelines of the Illinois purchasing laws. This position indicates broad objectives and priorities. Nature and variety of tasks involve established standard practices with varying degrees of ability to deviate from standard practice. There are numerous policies and procedures to be adhered to in this position.

Required Qualifications

1. A. Bachelor's degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND two (2) years of professional level accounting experience
OR
B. Possession of current registration as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant, or a valid license to practice
Public Accounting (LPA).
OR
C. Master's degree in Accountancy or a related field.


2. Demonstrated experience with auxiliary budgets with knowledge of finance and cost control principles.
3. Demonstrated experience writing and editing reports and other materials that reflect an appreciation for the report audience.
4. Excellent oral and written communication, as well as organizational and time management skills.
5. Demonstrated advanced Excel proficiency and experience working in other Microsoft Office applications.

Desired Qualifications

1. Knowledge of automated data processing systems, including accounting software applications.
2. Knowledge of accounting and management principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
3. Proven competence in managing multiple tasks and competing priorities. Ability to make quick, well-informed decisions.
4. Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
5. Demonstrated ability to prepare complete and accurate accounting reports.
6. Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed work involving the application of accounting theory to accounting problems.
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others, strong communication and problems solving skills.

Work Hours

Core work hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

1. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
2. Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
3. Remain at a workstation for extended periods.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
