About the Department:

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is the second largest college at North Carolina State University, a land-grant institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Agriculture and life sciences have been integral parts of North Carolina State University since the doors first opened in 1889. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences continues that heritage today. CALS teaches students in disciplines related to agriculture and life sciences, creates new knowledge through innovative research, provides solutions for the public with community-based extension programs, and develops leaders to guide society – all in an effort to improve the economic, environmental, and social well-being of our state, and the world. CALS Academic Programs carries out the College’s teaching mission, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as two-year associate degrees through the Agricultural Institute.

Essential Job Duties:

This is a 9-month lecturer appointment with option for continuous renewal. Responsibility includes teaching 7-8 sections per academic year (3-4 sections per semester) of two required three-credit courses: MAA102. This course develops the ability to utilize skills and technology to solve problems at a level found in non-math intensive programs. The emphasis is on application problems involving percent, ratio and proportion, single variable algebra and plane geometry. The incumbent will also teach MA103A which covers intensely utilized multi-step word problems which incorporate several mathematical techniques in combination. This course is expected to provide students with confidence and agility in their problem-solving abilities.

The position will serve on various Agricultural Institute committees, attend AGI instructor meetings, participate in AGI office initiatives and other duties as assigned by the Director of the Agricultural Institute. Duties of this role include carrying out math placement testing at orientation sessions.

Other Responsibilities:

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or higher in related discipline.
  • At least 18 credit hours of math courses.
  • 3 years of secondary or post-secondary teaching experience in math discipline.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to understand and propose alternate solutions to complex problems.
