As the first College in Colorado devoted exclusively to arts and entertainment, the College of Arts & Media (CAM) understands the influence of cultural evolution on traditional art forms. 

In recognition of the need for action to combat persisting inequities within higher education and tap into the power of transdisciplinary research and collaboration as the means for addressing the grand challenges that face the creative industries in the 21st century, the College of Arts & Media is implementing a national hiring strategy to attract diverse applicants.  This strategy aims to:

 The College of Arts & Media (CAM) 

CAM combines the latest technology with traditional methods, and we encourage our students to incorporate their discoveries of art's emerging dimensions with our comprehensive instruction on its classical forms. The College enrolls 1,300 majors has 120+ faculty and 25 professional support staff. This position will lead the first transdisciplinary Program in the College of Arts & Media by combining the intellectual and creative resources of the three departments: Film, Music and Visual Arts.

The Department of Film & Television (FITV) offers students the opportunity to learn about working in Film & Television while delving into their unique areas of focus and interest. The Music & Entertainment Industries Studies (MEIS) primarily focuses on commercial music styles. Students are given the option to choose from four distinct emphasis areas of study: Performance, Singer/ Songwriter, Music Business, and Recording Arts. The Visual Arts (VA) Department offers emphasis areas in Art History, Digital Animation, Digital Design, Art Practices, Illustration, and Photography. 

The College of Arts & Media operates two gallery spaces (the Emmanuel Gallery on the Auraria Campus and the Next Stage Gallery in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts), serving the community and all faculty and students across the disciplines offered by CAM.

 The Video Game Art & Design Program (VGAD) 
By leveraging creativity as a pathway to excellence, the VGAD will welcome Class of ’27, as enrollees in the Fall of 2023. Informed by successful game development specialists, game design at CU Denver will be built on a foundation of well-being and equity. This program will be aligned through the input of the faculty. The well-being and equity language reflects a desire to develop a radically new plan for CU Denver. Our plan is designed not only to reset the playing field, but to change the game, increase access to an excellent education, and tackle some of the grandest challenges facing our society, all in service of the idea that CU Denver should work for all.” These are the five campus-wide strategic goals for 2030, and the Video Game and Design Program will reflect these goals:

Reporting Relationships 

The Director of the Video Game Art & Design Program (VGAD) reports to the Dean of the College of Arts & Media.  

 The Director of VGAD is an integral member of the College's senior management team, including the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, Associate Dean for Transdisciplinary Research and Innovation, Assistant Dean for Business and Operations, and the Director of Human Resources and the Chairs of the three departments. 

 Specific Duties & Responsibilities 

    The expectations for teaching, research, creative work, and university service will be determined based faculty type and rankProvide academic and creative leadership and oversight that supports cultures of empathy, creativity, collaboration, innovation, respect, and teamwork within the College 
    Collaborate with all three departments to establish program and curricula As the program grows, support faculty scholarship, research, creative opportunities, productivity, and professional development for interactive games and media faculty Lead short and long-term strategic planning for the program in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate faculty, directors, staff, and College leadership Lead and collaborate with other colleagues in the development of serious gaming areas such as medicine, architecture, social justice, education, business, and others.Maintain a robust and collaborative relationship with the Office of Residential Life, in supporting the CAM students who reside in City Heights Residence Hall. 
    Convene industry leaders and academic creators to provide mutual support that is essential for the future of the creative industries Identify, integrate, and advance high impact learning practices such as internships, and international study abroad opportunitiesWork with the CAM Director of Enrollment Management and Assistant Dean for Business and Operations to assure fidelity in fiscal management to advance CAM’s academic and creative missions Identify and advance philanthropy for VGAD, outreach, enrollment management, and marketing efforts. Serve on committees and perform other job-related duties and special projects to support CAM’s advancement and the CU Denver Strategic Plan 2030
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at Clinical Faculty $75,000-$85,000; Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty $80,000-$90,000.  

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

There will also be a 12-month Director stipend with a range of $12,000 to $16,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications 

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Masters or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with industry experienceDegree may be substituted for tested industry experience
Preferred Qualifications 

    MFA, MM, MS, MA, or PhD with an academic/professional background in design, music, film and television, digital media, computer science, or a related field 3 years of teaching experience in higher education  Experience in developing and advancing programs in game and immersive media production, across all aspects of game development 
    Video game related publication(s)
