Description
By leveraging creativity as a pathway to excellence, the VGAD will welcome Class of ’27, as enrollees in the Fall of 2023. Informed by successful game development specialists, game design at CU Denver will be built on a foundation of well-being and equity. This program will be aligned through the input of the faculty. The well-being and equity language reflects a desire to “develop a radically new plan for CU Denver. Our plan is designed not only to reset the playing field, but to change the game, increase access to an excellent education, and tackle some of the grandest challenges facing our society, all in service of the idea that CU Denver should work for all.” These are the five campus-wide strategic goals for 2030, and the Video Game and Design Program will reflect these goals:

- The expectations for teaching, research, creative work, and university service will be determined based faculty type and rankProvide academic and creative leadership and oversight that supports cultures of empathy, creativity, collaboration, innovation, respect, and teamwork within the College
- Collaborate with all three departments to establish program and curricula As the program grows, support faculty scholarship, research, creative opportunities, productivity, and professional development for interactive games and media faculty Lead short and long-term strategic planning for the program in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate faculty, directors, staff, and College leadership Lead and collaborate with other colleagues in the development of serious gaming areas such as medicine, architecture, social justice, education, business, and others.Maintain a robust and collaborative relationship with the Office of Residential Life, in supporting the CAM students who reside in City Heights Residence Hall.
- Convene industry leaders and academic creators to provide mutual support that is essential for the future of the creative industries Identify, integrate, and advance high impact learning practices such as internships, and international study abroad opportunitiesWork with the CAM Director of Enrollment Management and Assistant Dean for Business and Operations to assure fidelity in fiscal management to advance CAM’s academic and creative missions Identify and advance philanthropy for VGAD, outreach, enrollment management, and marketing efforts. Serve on committees and perform other job-related duties and special projects to support CAM’s advancement and the CU Denver Strategic Plan 2030
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Masters or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with industry experienceDegree may be substituted for tested industry experience
- MFA, MM, MS, MA, or PhD with an academic/professional background in design, music, film and television, digital media, computer science, or a related field 3 years of teaching experience in higher education Experience in developing and advancing programs in game and immersive media production, across all aspects of game development
- Video game related publication(s)
- Thorough understanding of industry-standard game design principles and processesProven experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a diverse population at all levels throughout the institution—and into the community.Ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner, across various modalities. Capability to balance multiple projects and tasks in parallel to maintaining attention to detail.Expertise and cultural/social skills that create equitable and positive experiences for all. Outwardly contribute to a respectful, positive, and professional workspace. Demonstrated allegiance and influential ability to embrace and advance equity and inclusion.Ability to establish work priorities, follow through, and meet established deadlines.Strong judgment and critical thinking skills.Ability to listen and communicate relevant information, anticipate challenges, and offer constructive and enabling suggestions for resolution.
