Job Summary: The Director of Sales and Marketing is responsible for developing, establishing and maintaining sales and marketing strategies to maximize revenues. This may include management of sales activities, marketing, advertising and promotional activities.

Additional Department Summary: The Director of Sales and Marketing is responsible for directing all marketing and sales efforts for the University of Alabama Press (UAP), including forecasting and budgeting, proactive planning, publicity, advertising, direct marketing, exhibits, and sales for both print and electronic editions. This position is responsible for the development of full and detailed marketing plans for up to 75 new books per year as well as sales analysis, forecasting, and budgeting for seasonal and annual planning. The Director of Sales and Marketing has particular responsibility for the publicity and promotion efforts at UAP, including the development of publicity budgets, media campaigns, author events, and written publicity materials, including the management of the seasonal catalog and various subject area catalogs. The person in this position represents the Press with media, national accounts, and partner institutions as well as at book festivals, scholarly conferences, and other events. The Director of Sales and Marketing is also a key participant in digital publishing efforts, including new vendor arrangements, business models, internal systems, metadata, and workflow. A vital figure in the Press’s management team, the Director of Sales and Marketing participates in a range of Press decision making that may include but is not limited to acquisitions and pricing strategies, goal-setting, ebook strategies, and foreign rights sales. Regional and national travel is necessary to represent the Press and its publications at sales, publicity, academic, and book industry venues. The Director of Sales and Marketing manages two other staff members in the marketing department, a sales manager and a marketing coordinator. The Director of Sales and Marketing must be a confident multitasker with attention to detail, have the ability to manage the expectations of authors as well as other internal and external constituents, manage the annual marketing budget, and maintain and develop processes to ensure the efficiency and efficacy of the department.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree and a minimum of 5 years of marketing and sales experience in book publishing, preferably with a university press, academic publisher, or trade publisher. A minimum of two years managerial experience and a genuine interest in the publishing program of UAP.

Must have a valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.

Skills and Knowledge: Superior organizational and project management skills, including an ability to plan for and manage multiple priorities. Superior communication (oral and written) skills, preferably with the ability to write copy for both the academic and trade audiences. A proven command of technological literacy both in general computer use and database management, an understanding of and ability to use social media, and familiarity with metadata management. Energy and persistence. Ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively, and effectively in a team.

Preferred Qualifications: Master degree.
