Position Summary::The University of Alabama’s Department of Theatre & Dance seeks an experienced teacher of musical theatre and resident music director for its musical theatre concentration. The program is comprised of 40-50 students and five full-time musical theatre faculty. This non-tenure, renewable-contract Assistant Professor position will serve as the music director/pianist for all department productions and teach courses in musicianship, musical theatre history, musical theatre performance, and audition technique/repertoire. The music director is expected to engage in service/academic citizenship appropriate to their area and expertise, including recruiting, advising, and mentoring students. They are expected to maintain a good level of performance in the classroom and/or other appropriate instructional settings and to contribute to the overall instructional effectiveness of the academic programs in which they have assigned duties. This position will not be expected to prepare or publish original scholarship.
Ad Text::Minimum Requirements: MM, MFA, DMA, or PhD in Musical Theatre or closely related field with experience in professional musical theatre (Broadway, national tours, etc.) as a music director/conductor. Minimum of two years teaching at the college and/or university level. Strong piano skills and sight-reading ability. Comprehensive knowledge of repertoire and styles of musical theatre (Golden Age, contemporary, pop/rock, etc). Candidates must demonstrate a clear commitment to inclusive pedagogical approaches to accommodate a variety of learning styles and individuals. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in both the classroom and rehearsal room. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills.
