The Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support (IR&DS) is the first-choice provider of timely, high-quality, accessible information and analysis for informed decision-making at Stanford. We analyze and report on data from all of Stanford's major administrative systems, including student, faculty, course, research, and financial data. Our team provides to Stanford extensive expertise in analysis, statistics, survey research, assessment, data warehousing, data governance, reporting, and visualization. On behalf of university leadership, departments, and central offices, we perform and facilitate complex analyses that drive organizational change. Position Summary:

The Institutional Research team within IR&DS is seeking an Institutional Research Analyst to join our team of data enthusiasts. In this role you will gather, interpret, monitor, and analyze information relating to policies, procedures, and operational outcomes at Stanford. You will identify and collect data relevant to strategic priorities and you will turn it into actionable information that can guide decisions in a wide range of areas. From routine to challenging assignments, you will operate under minimal supervision and will contribute to both novel and ongoing projects.

This position reports to the Director of Institutional Research.

In this role, you will:

  • Answer questions by developing research methodology, gathering data, and using appropriate analytical techniques.

  • Proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions.

  • Explore data from multiple angles, determine meaning behind the data, and recommend ways to apply the data to organizational challenges.

  • Fully analyze a given problem, question existing processes and assumptions, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternative solutions, and propose the best course of action.

  • Communicate, convey, and visualize informed conclusions in a manner that “tells the story” to diverse campus stakeholders with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests.

  • Interact with and influence campus stakeholders, including members of senior leadership and the faculty with written summaries and/or presentations on assigned research.

  • Drive the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources. This may include delineating information to be gathered, collecting data at project inception, prescribing how to structure the data, and/or specifying a data warehousing structure for future access.

  • Work with individuals within and outside of IR&DS to gather, organize, and share data and findings.

  • Become the in-house expert on faculty data at the university.


To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field and four years' extensive experience or a combination of education and relevant technical field experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches. Graduate degree in a relevant field preferred.

  • Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.

  • Flexible analytical approach allowing for results at varying levels of precision.

  • Demonstrated experience querying, processing, manipulating, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets. Ability to use data retrieval and manipulation tools such as SQL, OBIEE, or similar tools.

  • Familiarity and experience with intermediate statistical concepts; proficiency with statistical software such as R, Stata, SPSS or similar tools.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to present data clearly, convey findings effectively, and influence a variety of audiences.

  • Ability to tell visual stories with data using Tableau or similar data visualization software.

  • The ability to:

    • Work independently within basic guidelines and parameters and with minimal supervision

    • Manage complex projects and meet critical deadlines

    • Establish & maintain effective collaborative working team relationships

    • Work effectively on several projects simultaneously

    • Engage in proactive and creative problem solving

  • Knowledge of, or the desire to learn about, higher education, university data systems, the structure and organization of various university functions, and the internal and external pressures facing universities.
