The Opportunity and Job Description

P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School (DRS) is seeking to hire an an experienced 6th-12th Grade Choral & Performing Arts Instructor for the 2022-2023 school year.

P.K. Yonge’s 6th-12th Grade Performing Arts Program includes open-enrollment courses as follows: chorus, theatre, musical theatre, middle school performing arts, band, and instrumental ensemble. Students who participate in performing arts courses at P.K. Yonge DRS are often a combination of students who have elected to enroll as well as students who are assigned to courses by counselors and school leaders. The ideal candidate would have advanced piano skills, choral teaching and musical theater/performance choir experience with grade 6-12 students from diverse backgrounds.

The 6th-12th Choral and Performing Arts Instructor will be responsible for the artistic integrity and quality of assigned performance groups, as well as directing and producing choral concerts and productions. Specific responsibilities and expectations for contributing to the P.K. Yonge Performing Arts Program are as follows:

  • Direct teaching of assigned students.
  • Administer and analyze formative assessments to monitor student progress and plan instructional shifts to increase achievement and success for all students.
  • Design appropriate curriculum, instructional, and assessment accommodations to support academic success for a diverse group of students including both striving and advanced learners.
  • Incorporate effective and innovative uses of technology to support teaching, learning, and collaboration in a 1:1 learning environment.
  • Maintain regular parent communication.
  • Engage in annual cycles of professional learning.
  • Participate in practitioner inquiry (research) to support professional learning and inform continuous program improvement.
  • Analyze the impact of teaching practice and implemented curriculum on student learning.
  • Select developmentally appropriate, yet challenging, music and materials for assigned courses and annual performances.
  • Program and prepare students for competitions, extracurricular, and/or community performances.
  • Lead and supervise rehearsals for special programs.
  • Assume responsibility, plan (i.e., registration, transportation, lodging, meals, chaperones), and accompany students to school-sponsored performances and competitions; monitor and manage student behavior.
  • Communicate effectively with administrators, parents, and teaching colleagues regarding scheduling, rehearsals, upcoming performances, and students’ academic progress.
  • Manage assignment and care of performance attire and equipment in the performing arts facility in coordination with other members of the performing arts faculty.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education & experience.

Minimum Requirements:
  1. A Master’s degree; candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will be considered, but will be required to obtain a Master’s degree within three years of hire.
  2. Florida teaching certification
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and effective strategies for motivating and teaching students with differing abilities from a variety of backgrounds
  5. FDLE Background check
Preferred Qualifications:

3+ years of K-12 teaching experience
