Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Student Support Services Tutor must demonstrate a mastery of the designated subject area and exhibit sensitivity toward students in the Student Support Services Program. Candidates will be required to attend training to obtain mandatory certification by Lone Star College. This is a temporary, grant-funded position. Continuation of the position from one academic year to the next is dependent upon continued grant funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Tutors students in the academic subjects of Math, English and ScienceTutors students with homework assignmentsAssist students with the development of study skills necessary for post-secondary educationMentors students in the area of academicsResponsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Access
  • Excellent oral, written interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work cooperatively as a member of a team
  • Ability to work with at-risk students and diverse student populations

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
  • Work hours vary with consideration given to Tutor's student class schedule.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the subject area

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree. One to two years of tutoring or teaching experience
Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is set according to level of education and tutor certification.

Range is between $9.16 to $24.36.
