Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

UNC Center for Health Equity Research is a vibrant intellectual home for health equity research and innovation at UNC-Chapel Hill and aims for global recognition of its role as a leader in the field. The work of the Center will bring together scholars, trainees and community members from diverse disciplines to form collaborative multidisciplinary teams with a shared commitment to health equity, innovation and translational research. This shared commitment will serve as a bridge among their disciplines and levels of experience. Center members will generate new knowledge and contribute to the science of health equity research thus driving innovation in collaboration with underserved communities to improve health.

The Center for Health Equity Research is located at the UNC Department of Social Medicine in the School of Medicine.

The Center Director is Giselle Corbie, MD, MSc. The Center’s core programmatic areas will serve as initial areas of program emphasis which include: Advancing the methods, metrics and analytic frameworks used in health equity research, engaged scholarship and community based participatory research; Policy relevant patient and community centered outcomes research to advance equity and quality of healthcare in underserved populations; Developing, testing, and disseminating interventions to achieve health equity; Translating discoveries in health equity research into social enterprise and innovation

Position Summary:

The Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI), in partnership with the Center for Health Equity Research at UNC-Chapel Hill and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, has received an $80 million award to serve as the coordinating and data collection center for a program that will overcome barriers and increase uptake of testing among underserved and vulnerable populations across the U.S. The program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is one arm of a wider effort called Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) (https://radx-up.org/). The arm to be coordinated by this project is called Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP). The RADx-UP program will support research that aims to better understand COVID-19 testing patterns among underserved and vulnerable populations; strengthen the data on disparities in infection rates, disease progression, and outcomes; and develop strategies to reduce the disparities in COVID-19 testing.

The hired candidate will oversee all components of implementation and execution of RADx-UP program objectives within the Center for Health Equity Research (https://www.med.unc.edu/cher/) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including all regulatory oversight and management of personnel responsible for support of multiple projects across numerous sites and locations across the United States.

The candidate will: Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the RADx-UP program at the UNC Center for Health Equity Research including supplements and related awarded projects; Effectively collaborate to offer shared strategic leadership of the RADx-UP CDCC with institutional partner leaders; Collaborate with business officers to manage financial resources and make recommendations to UNC PI for fiscal decision-making; Be responsible for monitoring the progress/performance of multiple projects and workstreams to include quality of provided services, timeliness of deliverables, compliance with regulatory requirements, and adherence to financial targets. Oversee performance and coordination of UNC RADxUP CDCC staff, supervise 5-6 staff that are a part of the CDCC or related programs; Effectively promote shared decisions with the principal investigators and key program leaders to achieve program goals; and support capacity building goals of UNC RADxUP CDCC staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

3-5 years of experience in research operations in an academic medical center, or in the pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, or contract research industry.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Strongly prefer experience in a community engaged research.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
