Department of Pediatrics, Section of Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center has an opening for a part-time (hourly) Clinical Instructor (Clinical Care Coordinator Registered Nurse) position. 

Nature of Work:

The Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center (HTC) exists to identify and treat persons with bleeding and clotting disorders in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.  The Center provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services; education and consultative services for community physicians, educational and other support programs for patients and their families.  The work is organized into three sections consisting of research, clinical care and pharmacy services.  This position functions within the Clinical unit of the HTC providing clinical care for patients.

 

Professional Field:

This is an hourly hemophilia and thrombosis clinical care coordinator nursing position with an active Colorado RN license. Advanced clinical nursing judgment which is part of bachelor’s or higher degree nursing programs is necessary for managing the care of this chronic patient population and educating community members.  The RN coordinates and facilitates the nursing care of people with bleeding or clotting disorders. This position could work with the HTC Home Care team and may be asked to provide direct nursing care to HTC patients in a home care environment.

The RN position responsibilities include but are not limited to: assessment and treatment of patients with acute bleeding or clotting problems under direction of medical providers, both outpatient and inpatient; and nursing evaluation of patients in annual comprehensive clinic and during follow-up clinics.  In conjunction with multi-disciplinary team, the RN implements treatment plans, provides education to patients and community agencies; participates in outreach clinics and programs; contributes to clinical research studies, and is committed to ongoing learning and education in this area of specialty and the field of nursing and medicine.

Position Emphasis:

The RN provides direct patient care for persons with coagulation disorders under the auspices of physician management. This includes:

Clinical Job Responsibilities

  • This position will make daily clinical decisions of a complex nature.  This RN will use physical assessment, laboratory assessment, determine payment sources for treatment and make follow-up plans for patients managed by our physicians with consultation with the physician, physician assistants or nurse practitioners.
  • Clinical decision making encompasses both pediatric and adult patients.
  • Consistent use of professional nursing standards and appropriate nursing theory in all decision making which are part of baccalaureate nursing program curricula.
  • Provides assessment and treatment of acute bleeding or clotting episodes and provide patient/family instructions—both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Participates as a multi-disciplinary team member in annual clinic visits as well as acute visits.
  • Establish and implement care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary team of providers.
  • Provide direct patient/family care which includes lab draws, IV access, both peripheral and central lines, administration of IV medications in the outpatient clinic or a home care environment.
  • In conjunction with mid-level providers, physicians and other team members, implements treatment plans.
  • Perform and/or actively participate in all assessment, diagnosis and treatment of our patient population in all clinical HTC sites, emergency rooms, hospitals, long term care facilities, and patient’s home as needed under medical provider guidance.
  • Review laboratory tests and identify conditions or concerns and reports abnormal labs and findings to physicians or mid-level providers.
  • Provides accurate, concise and timely documentation of pertinent medical information, labs, plan of care and assessments in patient’s electronic chart.
  • Utilizes recognized standards of care for bleeding and clotting patients.
  • Obtains medical histories and perform physical exams.
  • Makes independent nursing decisions using nursing theory, knowledge of pathophysiology, specialized hematology knowledge.
  • Consistently manages follow-up of patient and family as necessary.
Research Job Responsibilities

  • Takes IRB and other research training courses as required.
  • Provides research support to CRA including blood draws, history and physical exams.
Program Development Responsibilities

  • Participation in outreach clinics, educational programs and camp that may involve weekend time.
  • Plan & coordinate HTC Home Care in collaboration with the HTC Program Manager.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring rate for this position has been established at $52.88/hr.

The above salary rate represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Colorado RN licensure or ability to obtain Colorado RN licensure.
  • Able to transport patients as necessary; which may involve lifting 20 lbs.
  • Basic life support certification.  
Conditions of Employment

  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check
  • Position will be required to travel to outreach clinics, weekend educational programs, offsite meetings and trainings. 
  • Some evening and weekend home care or hospital visits may be required. 
 

Required Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced IV access and phlebotomy skills.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a registered nurse. 
  • Three (3) year’s experience in a Federally recognized Hemophilia Treatment Center
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Compliance with HIPPA regulations.
  • Must have the ability to assist a diverse population of all ages.
  • Team player with the ability to train and educate others.
  • Demonstrates interest in serving patients with chronic conditions.
  • Proficiency in computer skills with Microsoft Office and electronic medical records and data bases.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Hemophilia or hematology experience highly desirable.
  • Pediatric advanced life support certification desirable.
