Job Summary Job Purpose: Serving within VentureLab of Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), this position assists in the commercialization of technology innovations at Georgia Tech in key areas of business strategy, fundraising, team development and/or other related areas as needed. This position will identify and grow innovation, commercialization, and startup efforts related to Energy, Manufacturing and Smart Cities and related industry clusters, in close coordination with the director of VentureLab and the broader activities of the Chief Commercialization Officer, with the goal to spin-off of more startups in these areas where Georgia Tech has significant expertise.

Impact & Influence: This position reports directly to the Director of VentureLab and indirectly to several Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRI) Executive Directors (SEI, in particular). The position requires interaction on a regular basis with the Chief Commercialization Officer, IRI Executive Directors, and Georgia Tech’s faculty, staff, and students. Additionally, this position may interact with constituents of the broader Atlanta area, Georgia, economic development officials, and national community of business leaders, angel investors, attorneys, and venture capitalists.

Responsibilities
    Serve as a VentureLab Principal, working solo and in conjunction with other VentureLab Principals, facilitating the translation of Georgia Tech research and technology by guiding the development of new ventures. and as strategic consultant (in business model development) for assigned Georgia Tech clients. Work with prospective founders and inventors to advise on spinoff strategies. Cultivate and manage relationships between prospective business advisors, business partners, investors, and management teams. Support development of marketing materials and external pitch decks that highlight Georgia Tech distinctives in energy, manufacturing, critical infrastructure, and smart cities market areas, working closely with communications/marketing teams. Support faculty and students in technology maturation.Work with commercialization stakeholders in identifying unmet market needs.Help identify market and community needs for technological breakthroughs.
    Manage application process for the Georgia Research Alliance commercialization grant/loan program for assigned units.Develop and support the delivery of entrepreneurial programs/events. Organize internal events to educate faculty on commercialization opportunities. Organize external facing activities and events to promote exchanges with potential funders.
    Advocate client for awards, conferences, and recognition.Perform administrative tasks and other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications This position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook.

Extension Professional II

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field.

Senior Extension Professional

  • A Master’s degreein Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Technology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related/relevant field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred Qualifications
    Preferred Skills/Work Experience: Eight to ten years job-related work experience. Preferred applicant backgrounds include:Founder of a technology startup or early-stage startup experienceLeadership experience managing a technology companyLeadership or supporting role in securing multiple rounds of financing (angel or venture).
