Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The mission of Information Technology and Telecommunication Services is to explore, implement, maintain, and support the uses of technology to achieve the University’s academic and administrative objectives effectively and efficiently as stated in University’s strategic plan.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The IT Network Administrator II (ResNet Tech-2) position will provide the day-to-day maintenance and support to our Fayetteville State University’s residential students, Student Affairs residential staff, and the residential network infrastructure. ResNet is the Internet Service Provider (ISP) within the Residence Halls at Fayetteville State University. In addition to providing technical support for students and residential staff, the IT Network Administrator II (ResNet Tech-2) I responsible for the implementation, maintenance, configuration, troubleshooting and support of the campus network and all components. This includes, VPN, wireless, and general support of the routing/switching infrastructure. This position will also include support of the wired infrastructure of the Campus network, including patching and network cabling.

Duties and Responsibilities

Network Infrastructure Support – 50%

• Configures, tests, and deploys physical and virtual network equipment at our on-premise datacenters and in Azure.
• Resolves hardware and connectivity problems as they arise, escalating issues within the team when appropriate.
• Performs on-site engineering for escalated issues and installation/support of network equipment.
• Interacts with ISPs to resolve issues and install new circuits.
• May manage small initiatives and assist with planning of larger projects.
• Coordinates with other teams to execute and support change/maintenance windows for infrastructure systems.
• Participates in the change management process: creating, reviewing, implementing, and validating changes.
• Monitors and manages network infrastructure to ensure security, availability, recoverability, performance, and supportability.
• Performs routine software upgrades on network infrastructure to patch vulnerabilities.
• Opens support tickets with vendors when needed to resolve hardware/software issues.
• Responds to alerts overnight/weekends as part of on-call rotation.

• Install cable pathway systems, firestop systems, and various cables.
• Install and terminate cabling per project scope and engineered drawings.
• Install, terminate, test, label, and document all types of horizontal, & backbone cables to BICSI standards.
• Dress and route cable into telecommunications closets, modular furniture, and other work area outlets.
• Build out telecommunication and equipment rooms.
• Firestop various types of cable penetrations.
• Test, troubleshoot, and document test results for cabling.
• Successfully terminate various types of copper connectors.
• Maintain all documents related to cabling infrastructure and provide daily progress reports.
• Mount equipment while adhering to best practices, industry standards, and manufacturer requirements.
• Communicate with Lead Network Technician and Project Manager regarding work quality, performance, and materials.
• Conduct job site surveys including visual inspections and problem identification.
• Successfully interpret drawings, plans and specifications to properly install telecommunications equipment.
• Interpret the job plan and scope of work as well as perform retrofits and upgrades for existing infrastructure.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology and/or networking/telecommunications related discipline OR 2-4 years of relevant experience in installing, maintaining and/or upgrading local area and/or wide area network hardware, copper/fiber/coax cable installation, telecommunications systems and software may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Experience

• Experience managing, troubleshooting and creating VLANs, ACLs, and QoS settings in a LAN/WAN environment.
• Ability to troubleshoot and configure routers, switches, and experience with troubleshooting tools like network analyzers and Wireshark.

• Good understanding of TCP/IP and Web technologies.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills.
• Strong knowledge of fiber optic theory which includes fiber loss, connector types, and the different types of fibers.
• Full knowledge of operating fiber optic splicing equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and building plans, document daily records and reports, and hours worked.
• Demonstrated ability to use and care for fiber optic test equipment, ruby light, power meter, and OTDR and document test results accurately.
• Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g. , from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet.
• Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g. , attics, crawl spaces, utility holes).
• Minimum 2+ years’ experience installing, servicing, and maintaining low voltage cable infrastructure systems such as Category 3, Category 5, Enhanced Category 5, Category 6 and Fiber Optic Structured Cable Distribution Systems.
• Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g. , attics, crawl spaces, utility holes).
• Minimum 2+ years’ experience installing, servicing, and maintaining low voltage cable infrastructure systems such as Category 3, Category 5, Enhanced Category 5, Category 6 and Fiber Optic Structured Cable Distribution Systems.
• Proven ability to install, terminate & test low voltage cables & fiber optical cables to include twisted pair cable, coax, power limited tray cable, stranded & solid conductor low voltage cable, single mode & multi-mode fiber optical cables.
• Industry and manufacturer specific experience and/or certifications preferred (examples: BICSI, Panduit, Commscope, Siemens, Corning, Leviton, Ortronics, AV, Fiber Optic, Paging, etc).
• Working knowledge of industry standards including BICSI, ANSI, EIA/TIA, and local and National Electric Code.

Experience with ticketing systems and incident resolution in particular Remedy, IPAM Management or other related tools or knowledge.

Experience in troubleshooting complex network faults utilizing Cisco switches and routers, and ExtremeIQ and Extreme Networks Access Points.

Experience in utilizing the following tools: Cisco DNA, Cisco ISE, Remedy, in support of an enterprise class network.

Hands-on experience with Cisco LAN Hardware, including but not limited to 2960X, 4500X, 9200, 9300, 9500 platforms.

Experience utilizing tools such as Fluke or other wireless tools to determine coverage gaps and track down rogue devices.
