Job Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine/Shock Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Center is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant. Duties will include work with research animals including mouse colony maintenance and tissue collection, performing lab experiments and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory. The successful candidate will work independently, maintain accurate records, perform research activities and analyses and maintain a high level of organization. This is a full-time contractual position.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform mouse husbandry and colony maintenance and record keeping. Assist with animal survival surgery (brain injury) and post-op care; perform perfusions, animal tissue collection and processing.
  • Perform molecular biology and biochemistry laboratory research activities such as DNA extractions, PCR and genotyping, preparation and cutting tissue sections, histology staining and imaging, immunostaining and fluorescent imaging, Western blot analysis, etc. Maintain accurate experimental records and participate in analysis and interpretation of the resulting data.
  • Perform general lab housekeeping such as preparing chemical solutions, media, stains, and buffers, keeping track of and organizing lab suppies, maintaining accurate lab safety compliance records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or in a discipline appropriate to position.

Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Possesses a knowledge of position requirements and able to perform position in compliance with all requirements/regulations/laws.  Ability to understand and utilize scientific terminology and research theory. Ability and willingness to work with experimental animals (rodents). Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed.  Assume personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology. Ability to make independent decisions. Effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Write and present information in a clear and concise way. Interpret and understand written information. Work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.

Hiring Range: Low $40,000s; commensurate with education and experience.
