Job Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is currently seeking a full-time, Senior Research Project Coordinator in Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology to participate in ongoing and new research and clinical trials related to ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and other disorders related to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. This position, within the section of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), is responsible for recruiting and consenting volunteers for research studies; implementing research protocols including participant scheduling, interviews, data collection, data entry, data verification; collecting and transporting blood and other biological specimens, coordination of biorepository activities and documenting research activities; maintaining databases used to collect and analyze data, tracking protocols, as well as monitoring and evaluating entries in order to maintain compliance with Federal, State, and UMB regulations, policies and procedures. An ideal candidate will have a strong interest in medicine, public health, and healthcare research.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists with support of multiple research studies or clinical trial protocols.
  • Assists with screening subjects for research studies
  • Oversees subject enrollment to ensure that informed consent is properly secured and documented. Assess eligibility of potential subjects through methods such as screening interviews, reviews of medical records, and discussions with research personnel.
  • Collects baseline and follow-up data from subjects, including verification of eligibility.
  • Obtains demographic information; may assess for adverse events, obtain concomitant medications and interview subjects for follow-up.
  • Makes recommendations concerning time saving methods in data collection.
  • Checks validity and accuracy of data, ensuring compliance with quality control requirements.
  • Ensure that goals and objectives specified for the research project are accomplished in accordance within priorities, time and funding limitations, or other specifications.
  • Assists Principal Investigators and research staff in the preparation of new protocol submissions, protocol amendments, and renewals of ongoing research studies.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to other departments, outside organizations, corporate sponsors, and product representatives to promote effective and efficient operation and use of resources.
  • Attends research study or clinical trial related meetings, (tele)conferences, as well as participating in any additional planning and development related activities.
  • Coordinates with Division Finance Team as well as Clinical Compliance & Budget Office
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Nursing, Sociology, Psychology, or field of study relating to clinical research.
Experience: Two (2) years of research coordination experience with at least one (1) year experience of clinical research.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of best practice in research protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of human subject research, the regulations and policies surrounding it.
  • Ability to represent the Division, its research team, and its faculty in a professional manner.
  • Ability to keep patient information confidential, knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong PC skills, ability to use web-based applications and programs.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of people both internally and externally.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and execute multiple complicated tasks in a timely manner serving as a project coordinator. Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced, routine, and other project-related maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in fast-paced, deadline driven environment, with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent skills in the communication of scientific research and procedures.
  • Ability to gain new knowledge and meet the reporting needs of UMB policies and practices for Institutional Review, Human Protections as well in the execution of Data Use Agreements.
  • Phlebotomy experience highly desirable.
