Position Summary

This position is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data-driven software solutions within the scope of DIHI projects. This position will directly support DIHI portfolio projects and will collaborate with data engineering and solution architect team members to ensure that machine learning models are effectively developed and integrated into clinical care. This position will interface directly with clinical end users to identify relevant data sources, data elements to include as predictors, validate outcome definitions, and support the development and implementation of clinical workflow applications. This position will work closely with the DIHI portfolio and product managers to ensure that technology solutions effectively address real clinical problems. Lastly, this position will help teach students and trainees involved in DIHI workforce development programs.

This position will possess expertise in statistics, machine learning, software development, and data engineering to effectively develop machine learning solutions to improve care at Duke Health and beyond. This position will maintain comprehensive and contemporary knowledge of machine learning and software development best practices, with a focus on model development and validation. This position reports directly to the DIHI Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities of Position:

  • Data Curation, Harmonization, and Quality Assurance
  • Works with clinical end users, project managers, and diverse stakeholders to ensure that relevant input data are gathered to develop algorithms for validated outcomes
  • Interacts directly with relevant data sources, including electronic health record, claims databases, and a variety of relational and NoSQL databases
  • Performs quality assurance on all data gathered for projects and ensures that data are sufficiently conformant, complete, and plausible for downstream analyses
  • Assists with epidemiological and observational studies to assess problems within the health system and ensure that models address real problems
  • Development, validation, and implementation of machine learning systems
  • Works directly with data science lead, quantitative science trainees, and clinical trainees to develop and validate machine learning algorithms
  • Develops utilities and frameworks to standardize and enhance the development and validation of machine learning systems
  • Develops and updates monitoring systems to ensure that any implemented machine learning model continues to perform as specified
  • Reviews code and performs evaluations of previously built machine learning models before integration into technical infrastructure
  • Maintains contemporary knowledge of advances in machine learning to ensure that emerging technologies are incorporated into DIHI development efforts
  • Development and maintenance of technology infrastructure to support portfolio of machine learning systems
  • Works directly with data engineering and solution architect team members to optimize technology infrastructure for rapid implementation of machine learning systems
  • Identifies opportunities to enhance data structures to enable more effective maintenance and updating of machine learning systems
  • Develops utilities to enable comparison of multiple model versions integrated into infrastructure and rapid updating and evaluation of new model versions
  • Project and research management
  • Works with DIHI director and clinical and operational leaders to scope analyses and studies to gather data and assess problems within the health system
  • Communicates results of analyses and models to technical and clinical audiences to support technology adoption
  • Writes and disseminates material related to data science and machine learning technologies to describe innovation and impact to internal and external stakeholders
  • The position assists and leads in performing the following functions:

    1. Develops, evaluates, and implements machine learning models built for DIHI projects
    2. Curates and normalizes data and assesses data quality to ensure that data are fit-for-use for development of novel data science and machine learning systems
    3. Develops and maintains technology infrastructure optimized for model deployment, monitoring, and updating

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    • Strong background leading complex projects that span multiple disciplines
    • Strong background in Python programming
    • Strong background in statistics with experience developing, evaluating, and implementing machine learning models
    • Strong background working with relational databases and using SQL.
    • Prior experience with clinical, EHR and/or administrative health data required.
    • Strong knowledge of machine learning methods, software development, and presentation techniques.
    • Experience working closely with data scientists, data engineers, solution architects, and business analysts bringing software products to market.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability.
    • Healthcare/Research industry experience required.
    • Excellent written and oral communication

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Education: Bachelors degree in a statistics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or related quantitative field is required.
    • Experience Preferred experience: position requires one year related experience, either full-time or distributed among multiple part-time positions.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Data science / machine learning with healthcare data
    • Knowledge of software development, machine learning, and technology infrastructure

    Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute.
