Job Summary/Basic Function:

This is a doctoral-level adjunct position within the Helms School of Government online. Responsibilities include teaching one or more of the following doctoral courses in our Social Policy program (housed under the Ph.D. in Public Policy):

  • Introduction to Social Policy
  • Social Issues & Public Policy
  • Research Seminar in Social Policy
These courses cover a variety of topics in social policy, including but not limited to poverty, welfare, family dynamics, race, health polices, social mobility, religion, civil society, immigration, and political participation. Although this position primarily entails teaching in the Public Policy Ph.D. program, the faculty member may also be asked to teach masters and undergraduate courses in government and public policy.Responsibilities also include but are not limited to providing detailed feedback on doctoral student assignments, mentoring/challenging doctoral students to grow intellectually and spiritually, maintaining contact with students to advise on matters related to academic achievement, and maintaining/reporting grades and attendance in accordance with university polices.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Ph.D., Doctor (other than Juris Doctor), or similar terminal degree from an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in:
    • Political Science
    • Government
    • Public Policy
    • Public Administration
    • Sociology
Other Qualifications:
  • Proven research record and expertise in one or more areas of social policies and programs
  • Strong quantitative and policy analysis skills preferred
  • Demonstrated strengths in teaching
  • Strong organizational skills that facilitate assignment/task anticipation and completion.
  • Superior interpersonal and presentation skills required.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office suite and online Learning Management Systems (Canvas)
