Position Summary

Under the moderate supervision of the Department Director or designee, the Graphic Designer II utilizes state-of-the-art software applications to consistently produce high quality, creative work that anticipates college marketing needs, on time and within budget. The Graphic Designer II conceives, creates, and manages visual elements for marketing programs that fully integrate a cohesive visual approach throughout all media types. The incumbent organizes and leads creative assignments from conception to electronic output, including comprehensive layouts for publications and the Web, advertisements and advertorials, promotional and direct mail pieces, posters, logos, letterhead, web design and posting, and multi-media presentations. This position requires previous training, experience, and specific skills. The incumbent performs work with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

Essential Functions:

  • Promotes the college by consistently designing and producing creative and professional publications using various software applications.
  • Combines effective content with related visual images to further the college’s mission and maintain the consistency of the college identity.
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and produces materials for print and electronic media: magazine and display ads, posters, schedules of classes, catalogs, fliers, booklets, programs, signs, logos, exhibits, etc. under tight time constraints.
  • Coordinates design projects with internal customers and outside vendors, and develops creative solutions that meet budget parameters.
  • Creates graphics packages (e.g., catalog and preview book, logo design packages, etc.).
  • Coordinates art direction with photographer/videographer for integrated marketing concepts.
  • Consults with photographer to coordinate artistic approaches for promotional photos (angles, lighting, cropping, etc.).
  • Prepares artwork for inside and outside printers that meets established print industry standards.
  • Operates the PC to design publications and has a thorough knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat, HTML, CSS, Graphic Design, Web Design, Microsoft Office Suite and Typography.
  • Uses Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to produce the materials such as brochures, magazines, fliers, banners, web graphics, and ads both print and online.
  • Continually learns to use new software by studying manuals or undertaking training, and keeps up-to-date with new software and current trends in design and advertising.
  • Attends workshops to update computer skills and design techniques to include working with and adjusting photos.
  • Anticipates future software and typestyle needs and makes recommendations for budgeting purposes.
  • Knows how to create web-ready graphics and internet marketing material.
  • Trains other members of the department on new software, equipment, and how to organize and save job files on the computer.
  • Maintains a workable catalog of graphics and archives of past jobs.
  • Has advanced pre-press skills and can create pre-ready files.
  • Uses scanner to adjust, color correct, and crop photos.
  • Prepares digital files for printer, completing pre-press package for hand off to outside printer or internal Print Shop.
  • Develops job specifications (color, paper type and weight, layout format, etc.) in consultation with internal and external print partners.
  • Obtains and compares job cost estimates.
  • Manages job submittal and proofing process.
  • Negotiates for new pricing for jobs printed incorrectly or of inferior quality.
  • Consults with clients early in process in order to ensure that the design and copy of the publication effectively communicate the appropriate college message.
  • Helps clients organize and simplify information into a concise format, and helps them choose the most effective format.
  • Advises clients on procedures for specialty jobs (e.g. exhibits).
  • Communicates photographic needs to appropriate personnel, and compiles report of needs for any upcoming campaign or printed material.
  • Makes layout suggestions to other members of the department as needed and reviews those projects before they are sent to the Print Shop or outside printer.
  • Assists in interviewing applicants for positions in the department when requested.
  • Requests in a timely manner the supplies to support graphic needs.
  • Researches new graphic equipment and prices.
  • Anticipates design trends through research with graphic design magazines and resources, professional organizations, and peer groups.

    Minimum Education and Training


  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic/digital imaging or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Graphic Designer I with the College of Southern Maryland
  • Strong illustration skills preferred

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated artistic talent and capability as evidenced by a strong portfolio. This must include print as well as electronic samples
  • Training in all areas of graphic arts including graphics for advertising and Web; must have knowledge of or be willing to receive training in programming, operation, and troubleshooting of multi-image systems
  • Excellent grammar and proofreading skills

    Physical Requirements:

    The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
