The SDSU Magazine Editor manages the planning, direction and provides art direction for the university's magazine. The incumbent, a director on the StratComm team, also supports other print and digital publications and collateral, as assigned, to enhance SDSU's image, and to engage key audiences (alumni, prospects, donors, faculty, staff, students and parents).
Under the direction and with the approval of the Associate Vice President of Strategic Communications (StratComm), the objectives/responsibilities of the position are as follows: Editorial Planning, Marketing
The SDSU Magazine Editor serves as editor and chief architect of the SDSU Magazine, primarily responsible for long-term visioning for SDSU Magazine in collaboration with the Associate Vice President for StratComm in close partnership with leadership within both University Relations and Development and SDSU Alumni.
The incumbent manages the editorial voice of the magazine, independent of other editorial challenges (including NewsCenter) and is expected to have a highly developed knowledge of SDSU, current and world affairs, and issues relevant to higher education. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of information in the magazine.
The incumbent will also be responsible for actively raising the profile and reach of the publication, in both the print and digital domains, which includes growing the SDSU Magazine readership through marketing, supporting the strategic efforts of media relations, and developing a more robust digital presence. Freelance and Vendor Oversight
The SDSU Magazine Editor is responsible for overseeing and executing scheduling and production and the work of editors, writers, designers and photographers.
Responsibilities include developing content themes and story ideas in collaboration with the Associate Vice President, University Relations and Development, and SDSU Alumni leadership; assigning stories to SDSU staff and freelance writers; hiring photographers and/or illustrators and managing photo shoots and/or the illustration process; working with in-house and/or outside designers on visual content; conducting research and interviews for written stories; editing copy and proofing designed pages; and working with outside vendors contracted for printing and mailing the magazine.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, the SDSU Magazine Editor will manage the budget, working with printers, mail houses, freelancers and other vendors to stay within the budget parameters and secure the best value for the university's investment. The incumbent will collaborate closely with university partners, including development officers, communications professionals, SDSU Athletics and colleagues representing SDSU Imperial Valley, SDSU Mission Valley and SDSU Georgia, among others, ensure that the magazine contributes to engaging alumni, donors and other key audiences and builds a solid foundation for further cultivation. Communications Support and Special Projects
The SDSU Magazine Editor supports the review of editorial copy for NewsCenter and its weekly e-newsletter. In this capacity, the editor will support the editorial team when needed and at the direction of the Associate Vice President. The incumbent will participate in weekly StratComm meetings and serve as a contributor to the department's coordinated, university-wide, multi-location efforts to tell SDSU's story in compelling and effective ways. The incumbent, in this capacity, will offer content ideas, editing support and ideas content strategy and project-based-initiatives for week-to-week and major storytelling efforts. As secondary support to the editorial team, incumbent will support proofing and copy editing of news content as needed, and also support proofreading of marketing material, news content and internal communications, to include papers, letters and presentations at the direction of the Associate Vice President. Engagement with University Leadership
In addition to the leadership teams within University Relations and Development and SDSU Alumni, the SDSU Magazine Editor will work collaboratively with staff and assemble teams when necessary to produce content in support of the objectives of the magazine.
Responsibilities include working closely with other campus communications partners, development officers, deans and senior management to identify and prioritize key messaging, stories, visuals and other content for the magazine and the magazine site. The incumbent will also conduct research, write and edit as necessary to ensure consistency and effectiveness of message, and work directly with consultants, taking responsibility for the quality and effectiveness of their work product.Additional Responsibilities
The SDSU Magazine will also contribute expertise to SDSU's overall communications needs by serving as a project manager, editor and writer and in other roles as requested by the Associate Vice President, to include serving on various committees or project teams and other duties as assigned. Incumbent is expected to maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders, including campus communicators, alumni, faculty/staff, vendors and others as a key representative of StratComm on and off campus.
The SDSU Magazine Editor will have excellent oral and written communications skills; exceptional interpersonal skills and documented creativity and organizational skills. The position requires an individual to have strong editing skills, advanced knowledge of AP style and a proven capacity for analytical and conceptual thinking.
The SDSU Magazine Editor will also mentor staff writers, editors and student assistants to hone their skills and ensure quality control of SDSU publications.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs. Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications or a related field.
- A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience on a magazine, e-magazine or e-newsletter, or with a marketing firm.
- Experience as a writer, communication specialist or similar position
- Experience conducting interviews and writing in a range of styles; must have strong writing and editing skills, including writing and editing content for print/electronic publications and the news media.
- Advanced story development and journalistic writing skills
- Strong knowledge of Associated Press style
- Advanced knowledge of current developments in electronic communications and the adaptation of print for digital, and digital-first methods
- Expert grammar, editing and proofreading skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated experience with establishing workflow calendars and adhering to deadlines
- Experience developing short- and long-term communication plans and strategies
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- General fiscal management skills to oversee budgets and coordinate the work of vendors
- Master's degree in marketing, journalism, communications or a related field.
- Experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience producing creative material and communications for use in a variety of media including print, TV, radio, online and other new media.
- Demonstrated experience using digital mediums as part of a strategic communications/media relations campaign.
- Understanding and experience working with print and new media to achieve communications objectives for a large, complex organization.
- Ability to conceptualize, plan and implement marketing and communications initiatives at a large urban public university or similar setting.
- Managerial experience supervising and directing the work of others.
