Departmental Overview
The Life and Health Sciences Division is comprised of the Marian Koshland Bioscience, Natural Resources & Public Health Library. The division collections provide comprehensive coverage of biological sciences, natural resources, entomology, forestry, paleontology, energy, biochemistry, public health, optometry and vision science.
The LHS Division collections serve the University of California, Berkeley, Division of Biological Sciences, the College of Natural Resources, the School of Public Health and the School of Optometry.
Core constituents consist of approximately 400 faculty and lecturers, 1200 graduate students, 3500 undergraduate majors. The collections are heavily used by campus researchers, laboratories, biotechnology companies and community patrons seeking comprehensive biological and agricultural sciences collections, and community.
The Life and Health Sciences Division offers instruction for course-related classes, workshops, specialized tours, and graduate student orientations for departments served by the library. The Bioscience, Natural Resources & Public Health Library web site is a gateway to specialized resources and tools, ebooks, ejournals, research guides, links to campus, state-wide and national resources.

Responsibilities
- Supervises students who perform routine duties and responsibilities according to established guidelines, procedures and policies. Coordinates with the Evening & Weekend Supervisor on the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of 12-16 student library employees. Reviews and approves student timecards in Caltime. Student Library Employee responsibilities include: Checking out, checking in and renewing library materials. Sorting and routing returned materials. Providing information regarding location and status of materials. Processing requests for holds and searches. Assisting library users in acquiring NRLF materials. Routine check of identifications of users at check-out. May create “on the fly' records for materials not in catalog at time of check out. Processing paging requests sent via the library's catalog. Performing stacks shifts and special projects when needed.
Required Qualifications
- Aptitude for accurate and detailed work. Ability to work as a positive and productive member of a team. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks, handle interruptions, and deal with a large volume of complex material. Strong oral and written communication skills. Problem solving skills. Ability to learn quickly and perform tasks independently. Related library experience and knowledge of library practices and procedures. Knowledge of circulation procedures. Basic understanding of and experience with an automated library system. Proficiency with Windows, MS Office programs and Google Suite applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Effective supervisory skills to direct, motivate, monitor, and evaluate the work of others. Demonstrated customer service experience in a library. Experience with and/or ability to learn the Alma automated library system. Experience supervising student workers. Experience with biological sciences, natural resources, or health sciences.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Salary & Benefits
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, eligible for full UC benefits. This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $47,300.00 - $67,900.00.
