The Emotion and Social Interaction Laboratory, located in the Department of Psychology, studies how emotions help (and hurt) us in everyday life by examining the ways in which emotions influence social interactions, decision making, memory, prospection, and goal-directed behavior. We are part of a collaborative project (Healthy Brains Project) with investigators at Temple University and the Child Health and Development Studies (CHDS) to investigate influences on brain health throughout development. The HBP seeks to identify early developmental predictors that might influence clinical, cognitive, and neural outcomes in middle age with a comprehensive assessment of mental health, cognitive functioning, and brain structure and function.
The HPB is administered through the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) is the nexus for campus-wide multidisciplinary neuroscience research at UC Berkeley. Our community includes over 70 faculty members
in 12 academic departments
. This unique cross-departmental structure brings together experts from a variety of fields to use the power of interdisciplinary research to achieve breakthroughs in the study of the brain and nervous system, and to drive the development of novel treatments and technologies.

Recruit, schedule, and coordinate human subjects. Participants are people within middle age that are part of a study that began in the 1960s. Recruitment will require interfacing with Child Health and Development Studies (CHDS) that keeps the records of the cohort. Work with fMRI data; assist with conversion to BIDS format; perform fidelity checks for quality during collection. Assist with data transfer to Temple University. Set up materials and procedures for fMRI portion of study; troubleshoot computer, server, scanner issues in collaboration with Brain Imaging Staff. Run participants in the study, which will include all aspects of the fMRI portion of the study (screening over the phone and day of scan, instructing participants about procedures, collecting the fMRI data, transferring to server, creating post-scan pictures and movies; maintaining data backups, troubleshooting with Brain Imaging Center staff for issues that may arise). Escort participants between BWW and Li Ka Shing. Work with study collaborators on fMRI data preprocessing and analyses. Assist with preparation of work for conference poster presentation and with figures for paper publication.
Familiarity with software (Microsoft Office, Adobe, iMovie). Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines. Ability to work with community adults in middle age from a variety of diverse backgrounds and with diverse mental health histories. Ability to handle multiple ongoing tasks. Organized, responsible, with close attention to detail. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work with complex and large data sets for the fMRI data.Education
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field or experience in fMRI research and/or equivalent training or experience.
Familiarity with or experience in academic research environment. Experience collecting, analyzing, and working with fMRI data. Familiarity with software packages used in collecting and processing brain imaging data, such as MatLab, FreeSurfer, CyberDuck or other SFTP programs, Singularity. Familiarity with statistics and software, such as R, SPSS, SAS. Experience with research, including running psychological studies.
