Information Technology (IT) provides information resources and technology services to the entire campus community in support of the university's mission. IT also provides technical assistance in the design, acquisition, installation, and maintenance of campus systems, media, and telecommunications infrastructure including; desktop and laptop computer equipment; institutional databases; enterprise-wide applications; technology equipped classrooms, distance learning classrooms, telecommunications systems; centrally licensed software, online services, open-access and discipline specific computer labs, consulting, training, and user support. Information Technology provides assistance to EWU leadership in strategic planning for technology initiatives which strengthen both efficiency and effectiveness.

This position reports to the Network Engineer, who reports to the Sr. Manager of Infrastructure Services who in turn reports to the Associate Vice President / Chief Information Officer (CIO).

A Systems Administrator is responsible for the maintenance, performance, integrity, and security of enterprise-wide systems, including the planning, implementing, integrating, performance and security for server operating systems, virtual servers, storage environments, and networking. This position works closely with both clients and other IT staff on tasks that include development, troubleshooting, and maintenance processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree in computer science discipline or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Four years of system administrator level experience as part of a large, multi-server environment with demonstrable knowledge and skills includes designing, engineering, implementing and maintaining Windows and Linux operating systems, high availability clusters and Data Center operations and configuration management.
  • One year experience implementing, managing and administering complex, enterprise-wide infrastructure and services.
  • Demonstrated abilities in each of the following areas:
    • Working independently
    • Prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
    • Effectively communicate in both spoken and written form to a diverse audience, both technical and non-technical


  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification in one or more of the following:
    • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): Windows Server 2019
    • LPIC-1 (Linux Server Professional Certification, Level 1
    • NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA)
    • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
    • Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT)


  • Experience in using a well-structured life cycle management process for implementation of changes in application systems, including experience with project management and configuration management processes
  • Knowledge and experience working in a higher education and/or financial environment with areas dealing with information systems management and support systems


Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with architecting, scripting, deploying, installation, maintenance and monitoring of infrastructure and services including, but not limited to servers, server operating systems, storage systems, load balancing, virtualization, configuration management, system optimization and tuning, high-availability configuration, backup and networking components.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain healthy and productive relationships with coworkers and members of the university community.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to perform basic administrative tasks associated with: system monitoring, log review, code repository, system design architecture, continuous integration services and task automation.
  • Ability to perform basic project management tasks including ability to accurately estimate tasks and schedules as well as research technology needs and requirements for assigned projects.
  • Ability to act as an application or system administrator for systems or services as assigned.

Duty: Administration and Infrastructure Availability. Develop, architect, and utilize process automation, backups, test plans, performance evaluation, and tuning as well as the appropriate application of data center technologies to ensure data integrity and availability of enterprise-wide infrastructure systems.

Tasks:
  • Architect infrastructure solutions. Prepare strategic planning, architectural design and policy development to administer and maintain technologies that include servers, server operating systems, load balancing, virtualization and networking components.
  • Develop, create and maintain task/process automation utilizing configuration management tools and DevOps principles using scripting that includes PowerShell, Python, Perl, Shell, or other relevant language.
  • Ensure data integrity is maintained in the environment through system optimization, tuning, high-availability configuration, backup and administration.
  • Identify opportunities to improve enterprise level systems to support business processes and utilize emerging technologies.
  • Understanding and practical application of modern IT production data center technologies that includes racking, power consumption, hardware level monitoring, cabling, OSI model (IP, TCP, UDP, SSL and HTTP protocols), storage systems (SAN and NAS), Virtualization (VMware and Cisco UCS) and networking (ISCSI, NFS, and Fiber Channel)
  • Provide performance evaluation and tuning of systems within the Infrastructure.
  • Create, Maintain, administer, and configure backup systems based on processes and procedures detailing retention, storage, and restoration.
  • Ensure system support contracts and licensing requirements are met and maintained if required.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate projects and task.
  • Develop, create and test backup plans and recovery time objectives for enterprise systems.
  • Collaborate on development of a disaster recovery plan and a periodically test the plan.
Outcome: Infrastructure systems and services are developed and managed utilizing both industry best practices and EWU policies and procedures.

Responsibility / Duty: Duty: Installation, maintenance, and development. Install, upgrade, patch, troubleshoot, resolve issues and provide design support for IT infrastructure and select applications.

Tasks:
  • Implement installation of infrastructure architectures for bare-metal and virtual machines which includes aspects such as memory, networking, and storage.
  • Design and build the Server operating environment to meet business requirements that function in a ‘continuously operational’ paradigm.
  • Deploy and maintain required support software and utilities including script editors, command shells, firmware and virtual configuration clients.
  • Ensure that the server environment is kept up to date with security and critical patches in conjunction with state standards.
  • Troubleshoot systems to resolve problems, analyze and correct system malfunctions using tools such as tcpdump and wireshark; instruct users, and consult with staff and/or vendors to resolve complex problems.
  • Use appropriate troubleshooting methodologies through all layers of the OSI model to identify root cause of networking problems; plan for and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Resolve unexpected networking issues using all available tools and resources.
  • Evaluate, improve, and maintain information technology security throughout the infrastructure to ensure availability and operational redundancy.
  • Follow standard change control procedures for all changes to production systems and follow standard development/test/production promotion of changes including user testing.

Responsibility / Duty: Duty: Monitor, documentation and professional development. Provides proactive monitoring and documentation of infrastructure systems while expanding technical acumen.

Tasks:
  • Monitor systems within the infrastructure and verify integrity and availability of infrastructure resources and key processes; review system and application logs to verify completion of scheduled jobs and backups.
  • Document all facets of infrastructure (physical and virtual) including disaster recovery, SLAs, outlining of contracts, licensing restrictions, software installations and break-fix processes with the objective of providing repeatability, business continuity and alignment of strategic business initiatives.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to keep current with technological advancements, industry direction and improve skill sets.


Outcome: Infrastructure resources are performant and ensures business continuity.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.This position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Salary Information: The salary range for this position is $77,544 (minimum) up to $101,748. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
