Job Description

The Department of Art & Design at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art in Graphic Design to teach foundational skills in graphic design and studio art areas, beginning fall 2022. In collaboration with Department faculty, the Assistant Professor of Art in Graphic Design plans and delivers foundational courses that support thorough student understanding and application of design elements and principles to develop applied visual concepts in both digital and studio art mediums. This student-centered faculty member will foster creativity while providing hands-on graphic design and art instruction through creative process exploration, traditional techniques, and digital making with industry-standard Adobe software applications.

Applicants should
  • Be proficient in the theories and fundamentals of graphic design with a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) in a Macintosh computer environment, and understand industry expectations for new graduates.
  • Articulate a vision for a rigorous curriculum in graphic design and studio art foundations that prepares students to succeed professionally by cultivating their technical, aesthetic, and creative processes.
  • Emphasize visual problem-solving that will equip students with the tools necessary to give visual form to ideas, information, and emotion using digital and analog image-making skills, layout, color theory, typography, and storytelling.
  • Adapt to technological and philosophical shifts in the design industry and have the capability to modify courses when needed to meet such shifts.
  • Be willing and able to teach in blended (hybrid), online, and in-person (face-to-face) formats.


Responsibilities
  • Organize and teach undergraduate courses related to design foundations under the Department of Art & Design through planning, delivery, and assessment.
  • Plan and implement various activities, assignments, and projects to maximize the effectiveness of instruction and student participation.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with required standard industry hardware and software and keep up with upgrades and advancements.
  • Demonstrate characteristics of a professional digital designer, including creativity and attention to detail.
  • Keep current on curriculum developments and trends in education.
  • Demonstrate an active professional design studio practice or creative scholarship to meet tenure requirements at an R2 research institution.
  • Meet service expectations within the department, college, and university.


Assigned Teaching
  • The assigned course load will be 3/2, 2/2.


Determined courses include:
  • Foundations of Graphic Design within the Graphic Design program
  • Digital Tools & Applications within the Studio Arts Foundations program
  • Design Studio I under the Studio Arts Foundations program


About the Department of Art and Design at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi:
TAMU-CC has achieved an R2 Doctoral University-High Research Activity classification by the Carnegie Commission of Higher Education. The Department of Art and Design consists of 15 full-time faculty, including 12 tenured/tenure-line, 3 professional-track faculty, and visiting faculty, and 2 staff members. The Department of Art and Design offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts with Teacher's Certification, and Master of Fine Arts. The Weil Gallery in the Center for the Arts on campus offers students, faculty, and the community exposure to a wide array of exhibitions and events. The university is currently renovating a building in downtown Corpus Christi to include a second gallery space. The Department hosts or participates in a range of creative activities with entities located in the Coastal Bend community, including K Space Contemporary, The Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Rockport Art Center, and the Art Museum of South Texas and is a member of a dynamic arts scene that encompasses the metropolitan centers of Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.

Required Qualifications
  • Earned MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Graphic Design or equivalent terminal degree in a related field by the time of appointment.
  • At least one year teaching design foundations at the university or college level
    (Graduate school teaching appointment or assistantship experience may be considered).
  • At least two years of design-related professional employment or practice in the field.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • A portfolio of personal or professional works showing mastery of design elements and principles in execution.
  • Be willing and able to teach in blended (hybrid), online, and in-person (face-to-face) formats.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years teaching design foundations at the university or college level
    (Graduate school teaching appointment or assistantship experience may be considered).
  • Experience in other studio art areas of concentration, such as drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking, is beneficial.
