Costume Shop Supervisor

This position supports student growth in the division of costume technology (design/construction/production) and supports faculty with their vision of attire for all productions.  This is a full time (9.5 months; August 1-May 15), on-campus position. Responsibilities:

• Provides additional classroom instruction; advises and instructs students in costume construction (105y/106y), working across all degree tracks within SoTA, oversees instruction of THEA 112, THEA 211, THEA 317 when needed, attends planning and design meetings, advises student workers with regard to production.

   

  Manages all general daily costume shop operations and staffing; interviews and hires professional First Hand positions and assists in search of guest designers, trains all student workers and skilled student payroll, practices and trains in the use of safe handling of various chemicals, oversees maintenance, inventory and upkeep of of shop; supervision of Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor

   

  Teach and design, in consultation with tenure line faculty or Director of SoTA, when necessary; eligible to teach, design productions, and review portfolios of prospective students

   

  Manage long and short term planning goals for costume area; determine educational equipment needs, attend prospective design technology student interviews and current students portfolio reviews 

   

  Plan the costume design build process with guests and student designers for all SoTA productions; coordinate implementation of design, create original costumes, create original patterns

   

Requirements:

• Master’s degree in related field preferred; extensive professional theatrical design or costume shop supervision may substitute for some educational requirement 

   

  Minimum of 5 years work related experience; hand and machine sewing, patterning, draping and construction techniques. 

   

  Understands the collaborative theatrical process of design, construction and production

   

  Physical demands of the job include lifting, carrying, excessive standing/walking; may come in contact with and require safe handling of dyes, paints, and chemicals during costume production.

   

• Occasional evening and weekend hours for production purposes

   

  Valid Driver’s License
