Requirements

Research Assistant, Massive Data Institute - Georgetown University

The Massive Data Institute (MDI) at Georgetown's McCourt School of Public Policy harnesses modern data and computing power to produce cutting edge research and improve public policy decision making.

Job Overview

The Research Assistant plays a vital role to the day-to-day operations of our team at the Massive Data Institute. Their attention to detail, data mining know-how, and analytical skills are essential to completing the most important functions for us for these projects - proper data cleaning and processing protocols, thorough background research on relevant issue areas, and testing of our newly developed data governance models.

Work Interactions

The work of the Research Assistant fits into the overall missions of MDI and McCourt because it harnesses the power of data and technology to solve societal problems and inform evidence-based solutions to reduce inequities. Their contributions to our CJDC governance model and frontend platform, they ensure that we provide sound data to researchers who can examine social disparities in the current civil legal system for individuals facing evictions and debt collections.

The Research Assistant knows our data ingest and cleaning processes and our governance model very well, and readily applies these skills to our environmental justice work, in which we are building an equivalent data commons to examine the effects of environmentally hazardous sites on communities.

The Research Assistant‘s work of diving into privacy technologies in K-12 and postsecondary education is instrumental in the completion of our Gates Foundation landscape analysis. These privacy preserving technologies (PPTs) will advance equity in K-12 and postsecondary spaces by answering previously unanswered research questions on learner outcomes and allowing education agencies and institutions to make better use of available data.

Work Interactions

The Research Assistant reports to a Policy Fellow, who in turn uses the RA's cleaned data, literature reviews, and governance model feedback to inform their management of the CJDC, environmental justice and Gates projects.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Economics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Beginner experience in programming languages such as Python, R, or Stata
  • Beginner data cleaning, exploration and analysis skills
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once
