Learning Technologist
The Department of Education, Teaching and Learning is seeking a Learning Technologist who will report to the Instructional Designer Supervisor and will support the learning technologies of online and hybrid course delivery; assist the development and maintenance of online, hybrid, and onsite courses; utilize quality assurance, accessibility, and course design tools to maintain the pedagogical and technological quality of flexible offerings; explore and provide training of innovative technologies. This role must be proficient in the development of asynchronous training materials (print, web and video).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Course Development & Delivery Support (35%)
  • Collaborates with team members and faculty to develop technology enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
  • Provides technical support for online course delivery in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.
  • Assists faculty in developing reusable learning objects (Videos, lecture capture etc.) and integrating them into their courses.
  • Support the offering of ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online programs (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).


Consultation (20%)
  • Consults with faculty, Instructional Teaching Specialists (ITS), Teaching Assistants, and staff on a variety of instructional technologies such as, Canvas, Blackboard, TurnItIn, Voicethread, Zoom, Poll Everywhere, and Web Content Management Systems (WordPress, Blogger, Expression Engine).
  • Assists faculty in effectively integrating instructional technologies in traditional face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Assists in technological aspects of new faculty and staff onboarding process.


Training (20%)
  • Designs, develops and delivers training workshops to introduce faculty, TAs, and students to the emerging instructional technologies and their effective application in teaching and learning.
  • Develops print and video training materials and uploads to Teaching & [email protected] resource website.
  • Develop asynchronous Canvas training for program for new faculty and Teaching Assistants.


Technical Development & Maintenance (15%)
  • Collaborates with team members to test new third party integrations in Canvas.
  • Works with other Hopkins schools and Central IT in solving technological issues as related to Canvas/Blackboard and other shared learning resources using JIRA ticketing system.
  • Assists in testing new features and piloting new solutions in conjunction with other JHU schools.
  • Assumes an admin/leadership role on eLearning tools as assigned.
  • Assists in evaluation and pilots of new and emerging instructional technologies based on sound pedagogy and specific instructional needs.


Research (5%)
  • Keeps abreast of developments of related instructional technologies.
  • Researches and disseminate educational technology resources and best practices in technology enhanced teaching and learning.


Other tasks as assigned (5%)

Note: This position requires occasional evenings and weekends in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. (Dupont Circle) to accommodate program needs.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in instructional technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience, preferably with a variety of educational technologies and their value added use.
  • Experience leading sessions using a Web conferencing tool (e.g. Zoom), developing courses in a course management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) and utilizing web design tools (e.g., Photoshop, DreamWeaver, HTML, CSS), digital video, and audio editing software.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years' experience in an institution of higher education in instructional technology support, instructional design or in tech support.
  • Experience developing asynchronous training sites & materials.
  • Experience with learning management systems, including Canvas and Blackboard Learn.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of online learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard Learn) and integrated technologies, including a working knowledge of HTML coding.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and accessibility tools.
  • Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Panopto etc.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and emerging technologies.
  • Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching and learning.
  • Commitment to customer service, being team-oriented and working collaboratively in an academic community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group or individual.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
  • Quality Matters (QM) certification is preferred.
