The United States Coast Guard Academy is currently accepting applications for a minimum two-year appointment as Leader in Residence (LinR) at the Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership (Loy IFL). The Loy IFL works closely with the Academy’s Provost Office, School of Management, and Commandant of Cadets’ staff and other groups at the Academy who all share responsibility for cadet leader development.
The Leader in Residence will play a critical role in strategic discussions, the Academy’s leader development system, and serve as a leadership consultant/liaison to Academy faculty, staff, and cadets under the general direction of the Loy IFL Director, and in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Management. In addition, the successful candidate will consult on current leader-development initiatives and opportunities with the Commandant of Cadets, the military equivalent to a dean of students at other colleges and universities.
- Serving as an advisor and thought leader.
- Actively engaging in events that support leadership activities at the Academy.
- Leveraging professional networks and association affiliations to bring national prominence to the Academy’s LDP, and building sustained strategic relationships for the Loy IFL.
- Serving as a Subject Matter Expert for Co-Curricular Experiential Programs.
- Ensuring the optimization and integration of co-curricular experiential programs with academic coursework.
- Utilizing student outcome assessment instruments and data analysis to measure continual improvement within the Leader Development Program (LDP).
- Collaborating with faculty to increase the level and sophistication of scholarly research in leader development.
- Overseeing a portfolio of scholarly endeavors that are being undertaken by a pilot group of Loy IFL Faculty Fellows from the Academy and other higher ed institutions.
- Delivering leadership-related courses, training, seminars, or other support to advance the Leader Development Program at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
- Developing and conducting rigorous academic research on leadership specific issues.
- Facilitating learning enrichment opportunities for faculty, staff, and cadets via speakers, travel, and leveraging of professional networks.
- Advising and providing input on curricular development in the areas of leadership studies and policy, through development of training, research, and analysis to address challenges and opportunities in the leadership domain.
- Conducting research in leadership studies for peer reviewed publication.
- Co-advising undergraduate research projects.
- Teaching in the area of leadership and/or organizational behavior.
- PhD, EdD or DBA in a field strongly connected to leadership and leader development such as organization behavior, management, psychology, or closely related field.
- Demonstrated record of research.
- Two years of higher education teaching experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel and flexibility for limited evening / weekend events
Preferred qualifications include:
- Ability to teach in an AACSB accredited institution.
- Exemplary inclusive leadership skills, including a gift for public speaking, capacity to listen, ability to engage, collaborate and connect with faculty, staff, coaches, cadets, and external stakeholders.
- Three years post-doctorate research experience or equivalent experience outside of academia in industry or management consulting related work.
- Proficient in diverse methods of research, data collection and assessment.
