Job Overview

The DevOps Engineer is responsible for the management, planning, and operations of servers and networks in University Information Services; is accountable for the security, availability, and performance of these systems; and performs software installation and ongoing maintenance and improvements. They have the primary responsibility to work with engineering and operations staff to design new systems, as well as with end-users to analyze and document requirements. Because their work involves a very significant degree of automation, infrastructure as code and configuration management, which has a major impact on all systems managed by NCS, the DevOps Engineer employs their special knowledge and experience above a Senior System Administrator level.

The DevOps Engineer ensures system security and integrity of all systems managed by NCS, and spends time researching new technologies and assessing their applicability to Georgetown's needs especially related to the security and integrity of systems.

They receive periodic direction from UIS management to identify new projects, but work independently to design, develop and implement new systems in coordination with other teams.

The DevOps Engineer has duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Design and contribute to solutions in areas such as continuous integration, operations automation, full-stack provisioning, containerization, configuration management, and orchestration systems
  • Assist the Engineering group in testing new products, technology, and configurations in the testing lab; and provide assistance with integrating them into the server infrastructure to provide better performance, greater uptime, and new features to the user community - both internal and external to UIS.
  • Provide 24x7 server support by participating in an after-hours on-call schedule, as well as by performing scheduled maintenance and upgrades during weekend and evening hours.
  • Support a variety of applications and processes that depend on the servers and networks - for example, backup, off-site tape rotation, disaster recovery preparedness, directory, time synchronization, network file and printing, remote server management, remote user access, and system security.


Work Interactions

Working both independently as well as with staff from the applications, help desk, operations center, and other UIS teams for hardware and software-related issues, the DevOps Engineer establishes and maintains regular contact with peers at other institutions.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years' work experience in UNIX, LINUX, and Windows Systems Administration or an equivalent combination of college education and specified experience
  • Demonstrated skills in planning and deployment of complex information systems
  • Demonstrated practical and textbook knowledge of common network protocols
  • Ability to explain, document, and design complex technical architecture
  • Base knowledge of UNIX. TCP/IP protocols, programming languages such as Java and Perl, software development life cycle, and principles of relational database operation
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows administration, PowerShell, Windows updates/patches, SCCM, Active Directory
  • Experience with provisioning automation - Terraform, Salt, Foreman, OpenStack, Ansible
  • Production experience with GCP and AWS stack and VMware ESXi
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools like Git, GitLab; CI/Jenkins, Graphite, Logstash, Splunk
    Experience with scripting languages (Python, Go), understanding of web development, ability to use REST API's
  • Experience with web servers and applications, such as Apache, HAProxy, NGINX, Tomcat, JBoss
  • Experience with common Windows servers and applications - IIS, MS SQL
