Research Study Coordinator
We are seeking a Research Study Coordinator whose responsibilities involve research with human subjects, including middle-aged and older adults with and without cognitive impairment, and with specimens and images based on research in human subjects. This role will work with a team of investigators coordinated by Dr. Marilyn Albert, Director of the Division of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Sr. Research Coordinator to implement the day-to-day activities of the Johns Hopkins site of a large, multi-center study referred to as the Precision Aging Network (PAN).
  • The overarching goal of this study is to create profiles of risk for cognitive decline in a large, diverse cohort of middle-aged and older adults without dementia.
  • The measures that will be examined include cognitive testing, blood, assessments of blood vessels using ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
  • Responsible for assisting with the recruitment and retention of research participants and the completion of the study procedures. The latter includes:
    • Completing phone eligibility screenings with potential participants to determine if they meet enrollment criteria
    • Scheduling participants for in-person visits, which includes arranging transportation as needed
    • Administering and coding in-person assessments including cognitive testing, frailty tasks, biometric assessments, and carotid ultrasound imaging
    • Accompanying participants to other study procedures, such as MRI scans, blood draws and lumbar punctures
    • Processing, labeling, storing, and shipping biospecimens
    • Completing study forms and entering data from study visits into an electronic database
    • Monitoring the completion of cognitive testing and other questionnaires that participants complete at-home
    • Organizing participant reimbursements and honoraria.
    • The Research Coordinator will attend regular meetings with the study team and study leadership at Johns Hopkins, and perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


These responsibilities involve travel between several Johns Hopkins medical campuses including the main East Baltimore medical center and the Bayview medical center. A flexible daily time schedule will sometimes be necessary, based on the study participant visit needs and the available staffing.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline required. Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in a health-related field, and with clinical research, is important.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Requires familiarity with basic medical terminology, good computer skills, excellent organizational skills (including use of EXCEL and REDCap), and the ability to handle detailed quantitative information (e.g., when coding data and handling data entry).
  • Requires good interpersonal skills, the ability to work with a team of researchers (including doctors, nurses, technicians, research coordinators, etc.) and with a diverse subject population possessing a range of ages and cognitive function.
  • Must be able to work independently with modest direction.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
