Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

Responsibilities
    Involves activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external constituencies through programs, products, and services not primarily related to fundraising. Constituencies include alumni, local community, government, parents, as well as the general public. Translates constituent needs and priorities into customized narrative impact reports to create, enhance, and sustain relationships between the campus and its external constituencies. Using institutional knowledge and awareness of constituency perception, designs, develops and implements short and long-term strategic plans, programs, events, and activities that are related to the stewardship of Berkeley's 4,400+ endowment funds. Includes developing deep working relationships across campus to partner on the growth of existing stewardship programs and the development of new plans/activities that engage external constituencies around the impact of student, faculty and programmatic endowments. Oversees aspects of complex external relations programs, projects and events, primarily the production of written and visual materials as they relate to communicating with external audiences on the use and impact of Berkeley's endowment. For example, this position executes the campus-wide reporting programs that demonstrate to donors that their endowments are having a beneficial effect on the campus's students, faculty and programs. Not limited to but including annual endowed chair reporting, which entails working across the campus's units to gather information. Maintains appropriate messaging and design of program collateral. This position is responsible for articulating the impact of the campus's 550 distinguished faculty that are supported through endowed chairs (with a total of $650M in endowment supporting them), and also articulate that support to the external community. Quickly and appropriately identifies, addresses, and mitigates unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between the campus and various constituencies, keeping senior management appropriately advised and notified. May mentor less experienced staff members. Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews data, reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations. Works across the campus's fundraising community to ensure that appropriate individuals are receiving these personalized reports. Works on the messaging for the program and to secure the data required to prepare the personalized reports. Responds to constituent inquiries as they relate to the use and importance of faculty support for the campus. Establishes a standard of customer service to ensure exemplary support to internal and external constituents.

Required Qualifications
    Advanced knowledge of and/or ability to learn the campus, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, issues of concern and infrastructure. Advanced knowledge of and/or ability to learn the assigned area of responsibility, the campus' endowment and its support of students, faculty and programs. Advanced knowledge of issues of concern in higher education. Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external constituencies. Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies. Active listening skills, including advanced critical thinking and analytical skills. Skill to recognize potential areas of constituency concern and address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues. Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events. Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office and common desktop/web applications. Experience with design, especially Adobe InDesign

Education:
    Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $80,000.00 - $95,000.00.
