Director, High-Quality Curriculum & Instruction
The Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy is dedicated to integrating research, policy, and practice to achieve educational excellence for all of America's students. Specifically, we connect research to the policies and practices that will ensure all children have access to intellectually challenging curricula, highly effective educators, and school models that meet students' diverse needs.

The Institute has developed expertise in analyzing curricula and researching the effects of content-rich curricula through our many research projects and proprietary tools. Our Knowledge Maps™ allow us to evaluate an ELA or Social Studies curriculum in terms of the knowledge it offers students about the world and the human condition. We conduct this analysis by “mapping” the knowledge domains that are implicit in the selected texts - showing both strengths and omissions across the K-12 curriculum. Our Teacher Survey on Curriculum Use investigates the resources teachers actually use in the classroom. Our School Culture 360Ô provides analysis on multiple areas of school culture, including the robustness of academic offerings and equitable access to rigorous instruction.

We are seeking a Director of High Quality Curriculum & Instruction who is to provide ongoing operational and strategic support for the Institute's ELA and Social Studies Knowledge MapsÔ and will also represent the Institute's work on curriculum at conferences and gatherings with senior-level stakeholders; help to identify new funding partners (publishers, districts, foundations) for Knowledge Map™ reviews; present high-level findings from our tools and research to school-system partners and publishers; help translate our findings into high-impact reports; and lead the work of “connecting the dots” of content-rich curricula and its use across the Institute's projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Contribute to the Operations of the Knowledge Maps (60%)
  • Bring guidance and support to the Program Manager's updates to the Knowledge Map's domains, topics, and visualization of data
  • Provide leadership on specific consultative work with publishers and partners
  • Explain curriculum audit results to partners; walk them through their high-level findings and the topical details
  • Support the Program Manager's reviews and audits of reviewers on an ongoing basis
  • Recruit new reviewers and writers to the team


Lead the Institute's Public Outreach on our Curriculum-Related Projects & Research, with the Directors (30%)
  • Represent the Institute's work at high-level gatherings
  • Present the purpose, design, elements, and outcomes of the curriculum audits, in a compelling fashion to membership organizations, potential partners, and philanthropic groups
  • Identify new audiences for the Institute's voice to be heard on the importance of knowledge-building
  • Identify new funding sources for the Institute's curriculum work
  • Propose new writing pieces that bring the Institute's work on curriculum into the public eye


Create Explicit Connections Between all Curriculum-Related Tools at the Institute (10%)
  • Ensure that the Teacher Survey on Curriculum Use and School Culture 360™ examine high-quality instruction appropriately
  • Provide input on research projects that engage with robust knowledge-building


Level of Independent Decision-Making:
  • Must be able to work with a high degree of autonomy, interact with the necessary internal or external persons, and exercise good judgment on behalf of the Institute
  • Work must be of a caliber representative of the Institute
  • Must be intellectually curious and willing to gain knowledge about, and contribute to, the Institute's proprietary tools, research projects, and public presence


Internal and External Contacts:
  • High-level stakeholders at the district, state, and federal level
  • High- level stakeholders in private and charter school networks
  • External partners who are using our Knowledge Map analyses
  • The Institute's current and future database partners
  • Teacher experts who serve as reviewers


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Master's Degree required
  • At least 7 years recent direct experience within a K-12, higher education, government, non-profit, or corporate setting
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*
  • Experience in classroom teaching in Grades K-12 and/or undergraduate education
  • Experience in school-based administration


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in related field


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong working knowledge of content-rich curricula
  • Must have strong writing skills, including the routine use of conventional grammar and syntax
  • High comfort level with technology, databases, and online communication tools
  • Knowledge of the major domains for language arts and social studies in a K-12 environment
  • Detail oriented and strong analytical abilities
  • Excellent speaking abilities
  • Proven track record of initiative and follow-through
  • Must be highly collaborative, able to delegate, and able to work with a diverse population

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
