Summary/Objective

The Data Governance Analyst will support the data governance program to promote a common framework for design and operationalizing data governance processes, ensure common interpretation of data, business definitions, and other information assets across multiple business units within American University. The incumbent will:

  • Collaborate with campus partners and Office of Information Technology colleagues on the establishment, ongoing work and analysis related to American University’s Data Governance Program.
  • Ensure successful delivery of the data governance framework solution by engaging in communication, planning, project management, scope prioritization, risk management, change management, testing, and validation activities with both campus business partners and OIT technical teams.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborates extensively with the Analytics and Data Services team, product managers and development teams on projects and initiatives with data implications and impacts.
  • Leads design, development, and maintenance of the AU Data Governance Center (Collibra) - a repository which will facilitate and enable shared understandings of data definitions and foster trust in university data assets.
  • Serves as co-chair for the Application & Data Stewards Working Group, facilitates discussions to recommend and documents standard definitions and formats; disseminates data standards to business users and technical personnel; and promotes the creation and use of data management best practices within the business and technical community.
  • Works with Analytics and Data Services team, Office of Institutional Research and Assessment and Office of the Registrar on data governance program deliverables and projects.
  • Develops integrations between Data Management tools including but not limited to workflow engineering, setting up scripts, calling (web) service APIs, adding a Java module, creating integration with a target systems, developing scripts to import and export data.
  • Performs data research and analysis by working with the business subject matter experts to understand business processes, querying source data, identifying relationships between source data elements, and identifying business context of the data elements.
  • Identifies data management metrics, and designs data quality scorecards.
  • Develops and maintain supporting documentation. Identifies and implements improvement opportunities.
  • Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending conferences and advanced training in required areas of expertise.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact and collaborate and work effectively with all levels of management, business customers and OIT teams.
  • Experience in data analysis, data quality, data warehousing and/or data enrichment.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, given a problem statement and a general guidance.
  • Excellent analytical skills and requirement discovery experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Working experience in a Higher Education domain.
  • Hands-on experience in Collibra Administration – Managing workflows, Data Catalog Integration and care and feeding of environment.
  • Experience in implementing and supporting data governance solutions at large and medium sized organizations across multiple business domains.
  • Excellent understanding of best practices in data governance, data management principles and ability to perform independent data analysis.
  • Experience with enterprise data systems (ERP, CRM, Data Warehousing).
  • Strong SQL skills: proficient writing advanced queries to solve complex questions. Experience with JavaScript development; REST API and web services; programming skills to write Python or R scripts.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and the ability to work with different business areas and new systems/technologies.
