The Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries (N3AS) is a multi-institutional collaboration dedicated to recruiting and training postdoctoral researchers interested in neutrino physics and astrophysics, nuclear astrophysics topics ranging from supernova and neutron star modeling to dark matter, and fundamental symmetries. The collaboration is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Heising-Simons Foundation.
In September 2016, the National Science Foundation's Nuclear Physics Program created a new Hub — short for Focused Research Hub in Theoretical Physics — in the area of Multi-Messenger Astrophysics. The Hub consortium of 11 institutions took the name N3AS - the Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries. With additional support from the Heising-Simons Foundation, N3AS's primary goal is to develop the theory tools for interpreting observations from a new generation of astrophysical facilities. These facilities will probe some of Nature's most extreme environments, thereby testing our understanding of fundamental physics in regimes not accessible on earth. A second important goal of N3AS is to train a new generation of postdoctoral Fellows, helping them develop as broad theorists with the tool sets needed to address the physics of neutron stars, mergers, supernovae, and the Big Bang. N3AS physics interests include the neutrino flavor physics of these extreme environments, the properties of dense nuclear matter important to neutron star structure, the explosive synthesis of new nuclei, the use of high performance computing to model mergers and supernovae, and the possible signatures of dark matter and new weak interactions in astrophysical environments. The Hub was funded for five years through a cooperative agreement with Berkeley, with a schedule of activities that will be completed in 2022. It made an auspicious start, with the first group of N3AS Fellows arriving just as LIGO announced its observations of the first binary neutron star merger.
On September 1, 2020, N3AS began a new era as a Physics Frontier Center, following an NSF competition: PFC activities will ramp up as the Hub completes its physics program. The PFC collaboration includes new members who will strengthen N3AS efforts in supernova, merger, and kilonova modeling, the analysis of astrophysical data sets, and the role of dark matter in astrophysics. It also includes two new institutions, New Hampshire and Penn State. N3AS-PFC physics is organized around five scientific Major Activities — Neutrino Properties in Astrophysics and Cosmology; Nucleosynthesis; Dense Matter and Neutron Stars; Dark Matter and its Astrophysics Implications; and Astrophysical Simulations. The PFC will allow N3AS to create a physical center at Berkeley, colocated with astrophysics centers funded by RIKEN and CNRS. Through these international partners, N3AS will have ties to KAGRA and HyperKamiokande in the Kamioka Laboratory, and to the Virgo data analysis team. The PFC provides funding for a variety of activities that will benefit the broader astrophysics community, including workshops, an annual summer school for advanced graduate students and beginning postdocs, and student exchange with European Training Networks. It also includes an outreach program focused on undergraduate astrophysics research as a tool for encouraging transfer students to persist in difficult STEM majors.
Berkeley's Physics Department is ranked among the top few in various national and international assessments. The Department includes approximately 62 active faculty, 35 emeritus faculty, 41 staff members, 280 graduate students, and 300 declared undergraduate majors.

- Coordinates and publicizes N3AS activities such as workshops and collaboration meetings, helping N3AS establish a strong presence in the physics and astrophysics communities; disseminates information, selecting modes and techniques appropriate to reach various partners and locations.
- Develops the N3AS undergraduate research program in support of the UC Transfer Pathway model, working with involved faculty and postdocs, and coordinating with and building on existing program in Physics, the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division, and elsewhere at UC; helps N3AS export its model to other N3AS partners, including especially UCSD; implements other programs that have important educational and DE&I goals, including an anticipated NSF program to create partnerships between Physics Frontier Centers and faculty researchers from minority serving institutions.
- Analyzes program progress and impediments, working with the N3AS Director and Executive Committee, and with the Advisory Committee, to expand and improve N3AS efforts.
- Develops outreach materials, strategic communication plans, and progress reports working closely with other administrators to compile and distribute publicity documents and reports, and archiving for general public use presentations from N3AS workshops and schools.
- Recruits, hires and retains undergraduate researchers-, transfer and four-year students in the physics major.
- Supports N3AS mission to help young researchers develop professionally, including fostering mentor-mentee relations, helping N3AS Fellows develop as researchers, mentors and teachers, encouraging their involvement in programs that foster a more diverse and inclusive community.
- Supports the Physics Department efforts to establish a new Research Experiences for Undergraduates such as a new summer transfer bridge program.
- Fosters intergenerational connections by supporting the N3AS summer school for advanced graduate students, encouraging student participation in other N3AS programs.
- Provides strategy development for future outreach initiatives, in synergy with the Physics Department and other community partners.
- Proposes, leads and participates in policy and planning committees and working groups.
- Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements.
- Fosters relationships with N3AS international partners, by communicating periodically on the mailing list and facilitating the appointment and visa process for short term visitors and internally sponsored postdoctoral employees.
- Maintains communications with the Physics Department and MPS Division staff to increase coordination and consistency among UC efforts to support young researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and international visitors.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with staff, students, faculty and visitors of various backgrounds.
- Ability to use tact, diplomacy, discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Analytical skills, to use independent judgment and to make decisions and solve complex problems.
- Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals; ability to synthesize communicate and visualize information in reports and other formats.
