Research Data Analyst
The Department of Medicine is seeking a Research Data Analyst who will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Sr. Research Program Manager. This role will be an integral part of the team by developing, maintaining and enhancing data operations for Department of Medicine Critical Illness research program. The individual will work closely with other research team members and provide statistical design, data analysis, and data management expertise. This position will be responsible for conducting surveys, collaborations, and secondary data analyses and, for studies in which JHU serves as Study Coordinating/Managing Center, serve as a resource for participating sites regarding study protocols and logistics.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conducts surveys and follow up with a large, vulnerable patient population
  • Manage and maintain several databases in REDCap, including creating and modifying reports
  • Develop standard analytical summary data files, produce descriptive reports, including tables and graphs
  • Collaborates, designs and builds systems to fit the needs of the project.
  • Write statistical computer programs and review output for consistency and quality
  • Analyze data and prepare tables for Data and Safety Monitoring Board meetings and interim and final reports
  • Assist in preparing scientific presentations and manuscripts for peer-review publications to report findings, with the opportunity, if appropriate, to present at meetings and contribute as a co-author on manuscripts
  • Make changes as needed to the REDCap databases for the primary data collection instruments, including programming skip patterns and logic checks
  • Create analysis datasets from electronic medical record data received from several different health systems
  • Maintain recruitment and participant tracking databases in REDCap
  • Create and maintain data dictionaries for datasets
  • Train interviewers on performing data entry into REDCap
  • Provide weekly/monthly updates to study team on recruitment, study follow-up and other metrics of quality control
  • Perform quality assurance on data
  • Develop and oversee quality control procedures for data collection/analysis
  • Follow best practices for maintaining data in a secure environment
  • Assist in statistical analyses and preparing tables and figures for grants to secure funding
  • Work collaboratively with other analysts/study coordinators/staff
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline with 3 years of related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard

  • Ability to lift 15 pounds

Starting Salary Range: $45,650 - $62,850 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
