Job Overview

The Custodial Supervisor directs custodial staff in building cleaning and related services; ensures that custodial staff are scheduled and assigned to various buildings and/or areas; inspects work to ensure satisfactory performance, takes action to correct deficiencies, and takes necessary steps to meet special requirements or circumstances; and as necessary, performs tasks assigned.

The Custodial Supervisor ensures that services provided are consistent and at a high level of quality through adequate training, supervision of production work, and emphasis on the proper use of chemicals, equipment and the importance of quality control. They coordinate issues promptly and thoroughly with the Assistant Director.

They have an industry level knowledge and routinely update themselves (under the supervision of the Assistant Director) and ensure that all needed training occurs for their staff on cleaning protocols for disinfecting procedures, products and equipment. They understand the needs of the customers and building contacts to routinely respond to their needs; and demonstrate a willingness to serve.

The Custodial Supervisor is the designated building manager for the buildings under their care; and on a regular basis, they review and inspect buildings with the use of inspection programs for cleanliness, safety, maintenance issues and building readiness. They meet with designated building clients on a set schedule and review inspection information, and report issues and follow up on them to ensure completion.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Custodial Services, the Custodial Supervisor manages 1- to 5 fifteen custodians, and in some instances 1 or 2 floor care specialists. The team ensures buildings are maintained and emergencies are taken care for 300,000 to 450,000 square feet of space.

As necessary, they are called upon to lead and/or participate in department and college wide committees; and they serves as a University Facilities representative to the university community and visitors. They conduct themselves in a professional manner, carry proper identification, and comply with University and department policies and procedures. As a team member, they demonstrate a willingness to be flexible with personal and staff schedule to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of custodial experience (consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • A basic knowledge of English, including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding for communicating effectively and professionally concerning work matters.
  • Capability to analyze relevant operational issues and identify solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • A valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia driver's license.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to act independently and exercise mature judgment


Preferred qualifications
  • Some experience in plant operations maintenance
  • A demonstrable knowledge of the chemistry behind the cleaning process
  • Ability to keep pace with the changing technology and its application.
