Database Management Technician
The Department of Technical Services is seeking a Database Management Technician who will assist in large-scale transfers of library materials and in cataloging gift books and other materials as needed. Additionally, the position will be responsible for reporting progress to stakeholders both inside the department and across the library.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Transfers library materials from the MSEL stacks to the offsite shelving facility according to established protocols and workflows
  • Searches for, downloads, and edits bibliographic records according to national standards and in-house practice
  • Executes projects that have been organized by unit and department leadership
  • Collaborates with Collection Services to organize and facilitate transportation of materials
  • Assists with resolving conflicts (call number labels, etc.)
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding departmental documentation
  • Maintains the bibliographic integrity of the online catalog by identifying problems and updating records
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 1-year experience. Additional education can be substituted for experience*
  • Working knowledge of Excel
  • Ability to think logically, work accurately, and concentrate on detail
  • Flexibility
  • Good problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Experience using technology to manipulate data

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with at least one modern European language
  • Knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, such as MARC and RDA
  • Ability to use macros or other automation tool
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally ( Spanish, French, Chinese....ect)
  • Bachelor's Degree

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Sitting, standing and walking for extended periods.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $19.50/hr (commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours/ week 8:30am to 5:00pm

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
