Position Summary:

The advisor plays a key role in supporting students with disabilities as they transition from the K-12 educational system (IDEA) to college and post-secondary settings (ADA). The advisor provides comprehensive scaffolding and case management for incoming students with disabilities and other barriers to education, employment, and social/communication. All learning objectives, activities and support will be conducted with the student present and actively engaged in the process.  The incumbent’s role is to facilitate and monitor vital connections to academic support and serve as the point of contact for Step Forward staff, college personnel, PPT members and outside agencies.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, or a related field, with relevant practical experience; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • 1 year experience working with young adults with barriers to education
  • Understanding of Autism and other neurodiverse learners
  • Able to prioritize student needs and provide timely interventions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in academic and employment settings 
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA) as it relates to post-secondary transition 
  • Familiar with goal setting/monitoring strategies
  • Experience with job development and coaching
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Step Forward Coordinator, the Step Forward Advisor is accountable for supporting students with disabilities as they transition from the K-12 educational system to college and post-secondary settings through these essential functions:

  • Analyze complex disability and psycho educational documentation
  • Conduct New Student Advising and Registration (NSAR) for incoming students and designated adult support person (parent, guardian etc.)
  • Review student emails and assist students with composing and responding to emails.
  • Facilitate student communication with college professionals, PPT members and other appropriate departments, agencies, and individuals.   
  • Refer students to appropriate departments/individuals for services including academic adjustments/ADA, tutoring, academic advising, wellness center, faculty office hours and Step Forward Learning Strategist etc.
  • Act as the central or point person for information flow and provide written documentation of progress at PPT meetings by utilizing the Progress Update template. 
  • Communicate scheduling needs/updates with school district personnel and parents/guardians. This includes changes to student schedules and PPT’s/meetings.
  • Assist the Worksite Coordinator with scheduling students work experience and provide job coaching when necessary
  • Track attendance for all Step Forward seminars and report to school district.
  • Teach assigned non-credit seminar(s)
